History

The New Agioi Anargyroi railway station opened on 8 August 2010. It should not be confused with the Old station on the former Piraeus–Patras line, located on Iroon Polytechniou Street and between the vertical streets of Areti and Distomou and north of the current station, which closed in July 2007.[4] In 2017 OSE's passenger transport sector was privatised as TrainOSE, currently, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane[5] infrastructure, including stations, remained under the control of OSE. In 2019 maintenance was carried out, in part to repair water damage from winter flooding the previous year.[6]

Facilities

The station building is above the platforms, with access to the platform level via stairs or lift. The station buildings are also equipped with toilets and a staffed ticket office. At platform level, there are sheltered seating and Dot-matrix display departure and arrival screens or timetable poster boards on both platforms on all four platforms. Access to platforms 1-4 is via the main concourse. Platforms 3 & 4 are much longer than Platforms 1 & 2. To the left of the station buildings, there is a passenger car park, with free parking. Outside the station, there is a bus stop where the local 420, 711, 719, 735, A10, A11, B10, B11, B12 & L12 call. Road access to the station is provided by a small square that opens out onto Leof. Dimokratias.

Services

The station is served the following lines of the Athens Proastiakos[7] or suburban railway:

Line 2[11] Piraeus - Kiato[12] with 1 tph (transfer to Regional, Express & InterCity services at Athens).

Line 3[13] Athens - Chalcis[14] with 1 tph (transfer to Regional, Express & InterCity services at Athens).

Maintenance issues

It has been reported that the station's escalators have been out of order for years.[15] Furthermore passengers have complained of the same issue at a number of Suburban stations where the escalators or elevators remain unrepaired for many months when they break down, making travel for those with disabilities all the harder. OSE is responsible for the track and station infrastructure across Greece.

Future

In March 2021 plans were announced to connect Agioi Anargyroi with Athens central station. The ambitious plan calls for the reactivation of the inactivated old metric line of the railway that will connect the Tritsi Park and the Technology Center in Agioi Anargyroi with Athens Station.[16]
