History

The name Yukarıkurudere means "Upper Dry Creek" the village is called like that because there is a dry creek in the village, in the past the village was united with Aşağıkurudere (Lower Dry Creek) but they splitted because they were far away from each other. The name of the village before they split up was Kurudere. Both Yukarıkurudere and Aşağıkurudere was established after 3 Yörük (Turkish nomadic) brothers migrated from Yozgat at the 19th century. The people of the village are from the Morcalı tribe[2][3] which is a subtribe of the Avşar Tribe, they also belong to the Bozulus tribe confederation which had an important role in the Ottoman army during the Early modern period. The village has also a palace in their caves according to the people who live there. It has many treasures in it since that Byzantine and Ottoman barons lived there in early periods, people who try to take the treasures get arrested directly. The majority of the people migrated to Belgium during the years 1970-1990 therefore the village only has 420 persons who live there. The village has around 7 families in it (Palıt, Söyüt, Karakoç, Karakaya, Aktaş, Cıvık and Akın).

2010 Derbent-Kurudere water crisis

When a water source was found between the neighboring villages Yukarıkurudere and Derbent at the year 2010, both villages claimed the water source which ended up with a conflict. The court decited that the water source belonged to Derbent. After this decision the Y. Kurudere village citizens signed for a referandum to join the Kemerkaya village so they finally would have acces to water. The referandum that was made in 2012 ended with a tragedy for the Kemerkaya village because the Y. Kurudere citizens voted "No" with 4 votes difference. 126 persons voted "Yes" while 130 persons voted "No", if the results would be different then there was a chance that Y. Kurudere would become a neighborhood of Kemerkaya and would have acces to water.
