Background

Plans of building the World Trade Centre was first announced by the Port of Singapore Authority in 1973.[1] It was officially opened in 1977, as well as having a ferry terminal that has traveling routes to nearby Indonesian ports, as well as the city of Batam and Bintan Island, it also featured nearby Expo Gateway and Harbour Pavilion exhibition halls.[2]

The World Trade Centre hosted Miss Universe Pageant in 1987, the winner in this opportunity it was Cecilia Bolocco from Chile. It also houses the Honorary Consulate of Ivory Coast on the 9th floor of the building.

The World Trade Centre was later renovated from January 2000 with a connection to HarbourFront MRT station, and was reopened as HarbourFront Centre on 20 June 2003, at the same time as that station. The nearby Expo Gateway and Harbour Pavilion were demolished, and a new shopping mall was built on its former sites and officially opened as VivoCity in October 2006.

HarbourFront Centre is directly connected to HarbourFront MRT station of the North East line, the Circle line and the Singapore Cruise Centre is in the building. HarbourFront Bus Interchange is directly opposite Telok Blangah Road. Towards the west of HarbourFront Centre are HarbourFront Tower 1, HarbourFront Tower 2 and Keppel Bay Tower; all are office buildings. The Sentosa Cable Car station is housed in HarbourFront Tower 2, which replaced the old Jardine Steps Station atop the PSA Tower. All buildings are connected to HarbourFront Centre.
