William Galley

William Galley was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Glossop as a left half.[3]

Galley played for Nantwich before appearing for Crewe Alexandra in the Lancashire League. He signed for Crewe Town in November 1900 and after returning to Nantwich, Will then moved on to Shrewsbury Town in September 1902.  A draper’s assistant in his youth, in July 1903 he signed for Glossop then playing in the Second Division and made his League debut at Burton United, 05/09/1903. The left half had a two-month trial at Bolton Wanderers in September 1904 but it didn’t lead to a permanent deal and he returned to Shrewsbury in November 1904.  Joined Chester in July 1905, becoming an ever-present as they finished runners-up in The Combination in 1905/06 and 1906/07. Subsequently returned to Crewe Alexandra in September 1907, playing for the reserves.[4]

Personal life

Galley was married with two children and worked as a draper's assistant and buyer.[2] Towards the end of the First World War, he enlisted as an Air Mechanic 3rd Class in the Royal Air Force and served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force.[1] Galley was discharged in April 1920.[1] He became secretary of the Nantwich FC supporters club when it was set up in August 1923 and outside of football, he was employed as head of the furnishing department at Stretch & Harlock department store in Nantwich.[4]
