Plot
Lala Kedarnath (Balraj Sahni) is a rich businessman who lives with his wife Laxmi (Achala Sachdev) and three young sons who all were coincidentally born on the same day. On their birthday, Lala Kedarnath is visited by a well-known astrologer who advises him not to be proud of his luxurious life or be too optimistic about the future as the act of "time" is unpredictable. He ignores his advice and is busy making future plans for Laxmi. However, a sudden earthquake occurs and the whole town crumbles with Lala Kedarnath being knocked unconscious. After regaining consciousness, Lala Kedarnath discovers that his house is destroyed and his family is gone. The eldest son Raja ends up in an orphanage and the middle-born son Ravi is found and adopted by a rich couple from the streets. Meanwhile, the youngest son Vijay is still with Laxmi and they continue living in poverty as they are unable to find the remaining family members. Lala Kedarnath traces Raja to the orphanage but discovers that he has escaped from there as the manager (Jeevan) ill-treated him. Frustrated, he ends up choking the manager fatally and is arrested by the police. As the police drive away with Lala Kedarnath, Raja is shown running on the streets alone.
20 years later, Raja (Raaj Kumar) is shown as a sophisticated thief who works for criminal Chinnoy Seth (Rehman). Soon, he meets Meena (Sadhana Shivdasani), a rich girl whose necklace was stolen by him but was ultimately returned. Raja falls in love with her and decides to give up the life of crime for her. However, Meena meets Ravi (Sunil Dutt), a rich boy who is her family-friend. Raja gets infuriated when Ravi and Meena fall in love with each other. Meanwhile, Ravi's foster sister Renu (Sharmila Tagore) is shown dating her college mate Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) whose mother Laxmi suffers from cancer. Vijay and Renu take Laxmi to Mumbai for a surgery. Vijay starts working as a chauffeur for Chinnoy Seth as he is unemployed despite having a BA degree. On the night before the engagement of Ravi and Meena, Raja sneaks into the house of an asleep Ravi to kill him but ends up finding his childhood photograph, realising that he is his long-lost younger brother. Meena's parents decide to break off Meena and Ravi's engagement on learning that Ravi is of unknown parentage and religion. Heartbroken, Ravi also leaves his house after an argument with Renu over dating Vijay. Raja comes to know about this and decides to reveal his relation with Ravi at a party organised by Chinnoy Seth. However, Chinnoy Seth's employee Balbir (Madan Puri) misbehaves with Meena in a drunken state at the party. The party is ended as Raja gets into a fight with Balbir. That night, the drunk Balbir aimlessly tries to murder Chinnoy Seth for slapping him. Chinnoy Seth ends up stabbing Balbir fatally in self-defense. Vijay sees Chinnoy Seth dragging Balbir's dead body to Raja's wardrobe but is shut up by him with the promise of money for Laxmi's surgery. When Raja returns home, he gets shocked to find Balbir's dead body in the wardrobe and is locked in his house by Chinnoy Seth with the police being called. Raja manages to escape from the window but is caught by Lala Kedarnath on the streets. The police arrest Raja and Ravi decides to defend him as a lawyer. At first, Vijay testifies his statement false in the court but ultimately confesses the truth after being confronted by Ravi. Lala Kedarnath also appears in the court for catching Raja on the streets. Chinnoy Seth blurts out the truth in the court and is convicted, thanks to Ravi. Laxmi reaches the court to make sure Vijay did the right thing. Lala Kedarnath sees Laxmi in the court and has an emotional reunion with her and Vijay. Raja then overhears Lala Kedarnath narrating the incident of him escaping from an orphanage. He introduces himself and Ravi as his remaining two sons to him and they emotionally reunite with Lala Kedarnath, Laxmi, and Vijay. Ravi also reunites with Renu and his marriage is fixed with Meena again. In the end, they all build a rich house where they happily live together with the marriages of Ravi and Vijay with Meena and Renu, respectively.
