Vada Azeem

Vada Leon Azeem (born August 23, 1983) is an American author, illustrator, songwriter from Columbus, Ohio.

Early life

Vada Azeem was raised on the Northeast side of Columbus, Ohio. His father is of Haitian and African-American descent, and his mother is mixed of Irish and African-American descent.

Azeem graduated from Walnut Ridge High School and accepted a full scholarship to the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD), where he would only complete one year of school.

Music

Azeem named and co-founded the hip-hop collective Fly.Union.[1] They released a mixtape with DJ Mick Boogie titled "Closed Doors, Open Windows" [2] which lead to the group signing a deal with Maverick Carter and NBA All-Star LeBron James' SpringHill imprint. Azeem parted ways with the collective soon after signing.

The Anti-Parachute Theory Mixtape

Vada released his first solo mixtape in 2009 under the name L.e For The Uncool titled The Anti-Parachute Theory.[3] This project featured production from J. Rawls, Blueprint, DJ Rhettmatic,, and Rashad. P. Blackk and Von Pea of Tanya Morgan contributed vocals on a track titled She/Her. Following the release of the tape, Vada gained further notoriety by performing at Atlanta's A3C Festival,[4] New York City's CMJ Festival, and SxSW.

The Measure

In 2010 Vada released The Measure [5] (also under the name L.e For The Uncool). During this time he created a bond and alignment with fellow Ohio rapper Stalley.

The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street

This Extended play (also under the name L.e For The Uncool) was released soon after The Measure on 2010's All Hallows Eve.[6] The project's title pays homage to The Twilight Zone which is Vada's favorite TV series.

Prelude To A Murder

Complex premiered (under the name King Vada) the leading track of Prelude To A Murder titled Preserving Youth, which featured Stalley, 88 Keys signee Nemo Achida, and Fabrashay A.[7]

MURDRxFLWR$

Leading up to this project Vada released the Cardo produced track titled Finish via XXL.[8] Vada's first full length project since 2010's The Measure lead to high visibility premiering on Complex, and features other production by J. Rawls, DJ Rhettmatic, and DJ O-Zone.[9]

FLWR$ Before I Go

In November 2013 OnSMASH premiered Azeem's FLWR$ Before I Go EP [10] which features production by Cleveland, Ohio producers DJ Corey Grand and Twizz. The cover artwork for this project was created by Vada and UK visual artist Jasmin Sehra. A video for the track Savior premiered on Complex soon after the project's release.[11]

Twenties Go For Nix

After taking years off to write for other artist, Vada returns in 2017 with Twenties Go For Nix which premiered on Complex's Pigeons & Planes.[12] The project was produced entirely by long-time collaborator Rashad Thomas. The project allowed Vada to face some demons of his own, and vividly walks listeners through his past.

Children's Illustration and Literature

The Boy Who Tried To Touch The Sun

Azeem wrote and illustrated his first children's book in 2017 entitled "The Boy Who Tried To Touch The Sun".[13] The book features a young boy named Anu who is faced with seemingly impossible challenges that he overcomes with ease as they are not as challenging as the goal he has set for himself; to touch The Sun.

The Ribbon in the Sky

"The Ribbon in the Sky" is Azeem's second self-published children's book. The offering is an "ode to the perseverance of women, but particularly, women of color," Azeem told The Columbus Museum of Art during a 2020 interview.[14] The children's book was inspired by Azeem's wife and her uphill battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Personal life

Vada Azeem is a Sunni Muslim. He married his wife Aba on July 27, 2019. Vada has two sons, Peyton and Luca Azeem.
