Urgent Care Association
The Urgent Care Association (UCA) is the largest, most notable trade and professional association in urgent care. What started as the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA), was founded on November 12, 2004 as a 501(c)6 by Don Kilgore, Dr. John Koehler, Dan Konow, Dr. William Meadows, Dr. Lee Resnick, Marge Simat, and Dr. David Stern. On May 7, 2018 UCAOA became the Urgent Care Association (UCA). The association is composed of industry leaders, care providers and suppliers in the field of on-demand, consumer-focused healthcare in United States and internationally.[1]
UCA's role is to advance and distinguish the role of urgent care and on-demand medicine as a healthcare destination and support the ongoing success of their members through education, advocacy, community awareness, benchmarking and promoting standards of excellence.
Educational resources
UCA offers educational and professional development resources including live webinars, convention recordings, and self-paced learning content through its online education portal, in addition to providing resources for starting a new urgent care center, provision of clinical care in the urgent care setting, and running a successful urgent care practice.[2]
UCA also holds an annual Convention in coordination with the College of Urgent Care Medicine. Additionally, UCA publishes Benchmarking Reports[3] on emerging trends in the urgent care industry.
Journal of Urgent Care Medicine
As the Official Publication[4] of the Urgent Care Association and the College of Urgent Care Medicine, the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine (JUCM) seeks to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas regarding the clinical and business best practices for running an urgent care center. JUCM is published by agreement between Braveheart Group, LLC, the Urgent Care Association (www.ucaoa.org) and the College of Urgent Care Medicine (www.coucm.org). JUCM serves as the official publication of both organizations. The journal features columns on medical coding, legal aspects of urgent care, and occupational medicine matters. It is currently the only peer-reviewed journal focusing on Urgent Care medicine worldwide. Started in 2006, Dr. Lee Resnick served as the Editor-in-Chief of the publication until 2019.
Certified Urgent Care designation
In 2009, the UCA established the Certified Urgent Care (CUC) designation that recognizes urgent care centers that meet nationally standardized criteria to demonstrate their commitment to meet the scope of minimal expectations to define a qualified urgent care center. This designation tells the public and payers that the urgent care center's scope of practice is consistent with a set of UCA criteria defining easy access and services that allow for care of a broad spectrum of illness, injury, and disease. Urgent care centers with the CUC designation have a mark of distinction to educate their community and stakeholders, gain an edge in marketing their level of services, and eliminate confusion with other kinds of providers.
Urgent Care Accreditation
The Urgent Care Association Accreditation program advances an urgent care organization to the highest level of distinction in patient care through safety, quality & scope of services. UCA Accreditation also helps urgent care centers and clinics stay in-network with select payers.
