History

1976-2000

University Radio Falmer began broadcasting in February 1976 from Norwich House, on the University of Sussex campus in Falmer. Notable alumni from during this period include British journalist and newscaster Clive Myrie.[1]

2000-2020

URF relaunched as a fully digital and online radio station in 2006.

In 2018, the new URF website was launched and the first ever 24 Hour Charity Broadcast was held, hosted by former URF station-manager Fin Evans and The Tab Sussex editor-in-chief at the time, Kyle Farrell.[2] The first ever URF ACCA Takeover took place in March, once the building had re-opened after extensive renovations and modernisation.[3]

In 2019, URF entered a year long collaboration with the Sydney University Radio Group (SURG), which saw SURG programming being broadcast through URF whilst off-air, as well as shared content between both stations’ social media and news divisions.[4] In October, URF also began publishing a monthly column in The Badger, entitled 'On The Record with URF'.

2020-Present

In March 2020, URF were forced to temporarily suspend broadcasting, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Podcasting side of URF, 76 Podcasting, was officially launched in September 2020, alongside its website and founding shows.[5]

After almost twenty months, URF Resumed broadcasting in November 2021. The current Station Manager and Assistant Station Manager in the 2021/22 academic year are Hazel Storer and Matt Prtichard.
