Trash Taste is a weekly audio and video podcast hosted by Joey Bizinger, Garnt Maneetapho, and Connor Colquhoun - three Tokyo-based content creators primarily focusing on anime and Japanese pop culture.[3] The podcast generally discusses Japanese culture and life in Japan.[4]

History

The podcast was started in February 2020 by GeeXPlus, a subsidiary of BookWalker, who helped the three hosts to relocate to Japan to help them have more access to Japanese culture and to promote their products on their channel. Since the three were brought over in Japan, they decided to start a podcast that was already planned on the back of their minds for some time.[5][6] The first episode of the podcast was uploaded to YouTube on 5 June 2020. Since then, new episodes have been released every Friday, with the exceptions of 30 October 2020, 26 February 2021, and 7 January 2022, on which YouTube-exclusive specials were released instead.[7]

On 26 May 2021, the hosts moved out of the studio in which they had recorded the first fifty-four episodes, dubbed season one, and relocated to a new studio that officially kicked-off season two.[8] On 17 June 2021, the hosts were invited for a live 'podcast' event about Japan-based YouTubers by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan; discussions range from living in Japan to how Trash Taste got started.[9][10] Trash Taste also appeared in the Foreign Correspondent Club Japan's Number 1 Shimbun Magazine June 2021 volume. [11]

On 19 March 2022, they've hosted a 24 hour long charity event for Doctors Without Borders on their Twitch channel, at the end of which they managed to raise a total of $181,000 from viewers donations.[12]

Format

Discussions in the podcast are about more than just anime, and delve into various topics, including otaku culture, life in Japan, and topics varying on the episode's theme.

So far, on eighteen episodes, the podcast has featured several special guests. As of 28 January 2022, these guests have included Chris Broad (four times), Kaho Shibuya, Meilyne Tran (the show's executive producer who has appeared twice), Mori Calliope (who has also appeared twice), Sydsnap, Noriyaro, Ken Arto, Nano, Akidearest, Ladybeard, Reina Scully, Shu Uchida, Geno Samuel, and Kson.[13][14][15][16][17] The hosts have also expressed interest in featuring PewDiePie, Cr1TiKaL and Kevin Penkin as guests, all of whom have also expressed interest in being featured on the podcast, and claimed that they plan to visit Japan once travel restrictions enacted because of the COVID-19 pandemic permit them to do so.

Generally, each episode is between one and three hours long, and is broken up intermittently with sponsor spots and a list of all Patreon subscribers near the end. The intro and outro title card both feature the copyright-free song "Soul Searching" by Causmic.[18]

The podcast's producer is Meilyne Tran, with video editing by Toomas Lismus (MudanTV).[1][19]

YouTube

The Trash Taste podcast uses three channels on YouTube. The first and main channel is Trash Taste, which includes all the podcast episodes and specials. The second, Trash Taste Highlights, provides short clips from each podcast episode that are significant or interesting. The third, Trash Taste After Dark, reuploads livestreams from the podcast's Twitch channel.[20]

The Trash Taste channel was created on 14 February 2020, posting its first video on 5 June 2020. The channel has 1,230,000 subscribers as of March 21st 2022.[21] The Trash Taste Highlights channel was also created on 14 February 2020, posting its first video on 6 June 2020. This channel has 595,000 subscribers as of March 21st 2022.[22] The Trash Taste After Dark channel (originally called Trash Taste Streams) was created on 23 August 2019, posting its first video on 28 January 2021. This channel has 406,000 subscribers as of March 21st 2022.[23] On 11 March 2022 the Trash Taste Shorts channel was created that uses YouTube's YouTube Shorts functionality where they upload, at most, 60 seconds clips from the original episodes usually highlighting the funniest scenes from them. This channel has 5,090 subscribers as of March 25th 2022.[24]

In addition to the three YouTube channels, the podcast also has a Twitch channel, called trashtastepodcast, which has 232,700 followers as of March 5th 2022.

The podcast also has a dedicated subreddit (r/TrashTaste) devoted to the media of the podcast, whereit be memes or just general questions about episodes, which has 219,000+ members as of March 5th 2022.

Specials

Typically debuting on a week in which no episode of the podcast is released, the specials, available only on YouTube, feature the hosts of Trash Taste outside the studio.
