January 2000
- January 27 – President Clinton delivers his final State of the Union Address before a joint session of Congress.[1]
- January 29 – President Clinton delivers remarks to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.[2]
September
September 26 - President Clinton delivers remarks in Georgetown University law school. Clinton talks about the role of government, the spreading of democracy, voting irregularities in Serbia, trade with China, and the inter connectivity of different countries. [3]
November
- November 7 – The 2000 United States presidential election takes place. Florida quickly becomes the deciding factor in the election, although networks are unable to project a winner in the state (and therefore in the election) and a recount is triggered.[4]: 16
- November 7 – The Republican Party wins 221 seats to Democrats' 214 in the United States House of Representatives; however, Republicans lose 4 seats in the United States Senate, and Democrats thereby will take Senate control briefly, since Al Gore will still be Vice President from January 3 until the inauguration of Dick Cheney on January 20.[5]
December
- December 13 – The Republican Party presidential nominee George W. Bush becomes President-elect following the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Bush v. Gore.[6]
- December 19 – President Clinton meets with President-elect George W. Bush at the Oval Office to discuss the transition of power between the presidents.[7][8]
January 2001
- January 3 – The 107th United States Congress convenes with the Republican Party having a 221-seat majority in the House of Representatives,[9] while the Democratic Party briefly controls the Senate until January 20.[10]
- January 3 – First Lady Hillary Clinton is sworn in as a United States Senator from New York.[11]
- January 6 – In a joint session of the United States Congress, the results for the electoral college are counted. In his role as President of the Senate, Vice President Al Gore reads the results and declares President-elect George W. Bush as the winner of the 2000 presidential election.
- January 18 – President Clinton delivers his farewell address in the Oval Office.[12]
- January 20 – President Clinton completes his two terms in office and leaves the White House for the final time as Commander-in-chief.[13]
- January 20 – George W. Bush is inaugurated as the 43rd president of the United States, at noon EST. Bill Clinton, who is now former president, returns to Chappaqua to begin his post-presidency.[13]
