Impact
In the film, Hilton talks about her experiences in four different “troubled teen” industry programs: CEDU School in Running Springs, California, Ascent Wilderness Program in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, Cascade School in Whitmore, California, and Provo Canyon School in Provo, Utah. After running from the first three, she spent 11 months at Provo Canyon School in the late 1990s. Hilton reported that she and other students were physically and psychologically abused.[9] Some of the instances she details include how she and the other students were allegedly drugged with unknown medications, how she was allegedly restrained and forcibly transported to the different programs and how she was stripped searched and placed in a seclusion room for nearly twenty-four hours.
When This is Paris premiered, Hilton made it her mission to ensure that no more youth suffer at the hands of abusive youth residential facilities. In one year, her vocal advocacy influenced the passage of U.S. state laws in California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon, Utah, as well as a resolution in Northern Ireland.[10]
