In September 2021, Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company for $686 million.[1] On January 6, 2022, gossip columnist Baz Bamigboye said Wes Anderson was set to write and direct an adaptation of the short story by Roald Dahl with Netflix distributing and Benedict Cumberbatch starring as Sugar.[2] The project was confirmed the following day, with Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, and Ben Kingsley joining the cast.[3] On January 12, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade were added to the cast.[4] Filming began on January 14 in London.[3]
