History
The podcast was co-founded in 2013 by Schaub and comedian Bryan Callen.[3] The podcast takes its name from Schaub being known as a fighter, while Callen is known in the LA stand-up comedy circuit by his nickname Bryan 'The Kid' Callen.
In August 2020, Bryan Callen announced a leave of absence from the podcast,[4] after denying allegations of sexual assault or misconduct by four women.[5][6] This came soon after news of sexual misconduct allegations made against Chris D'Elia,[7][8] a frequent guest on the podcast.
Following Callen's leave of absence, the podcast continued to be hosted by Schaub, alongside guest co-hosts including Malik Bazille and Shapel Lacey, with Callen eventually returning as a regular guest co-host during 2021.
Format
Twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Schaub is joined in a casual talk setting by guest co-hosts. Shapel Lacey and Callen are frequent guest co-hosts joining Brendan in studio. The hosts are infrequently joined by interview guests.
Topics range widely, but common themes include stand-up comedy, MMA, Los Angeles, and Schaub's personal life.
The podcast is performed prerecorded, and published both on video via YouTube and in audio form across a number of platforms including Spotify. The show is produced by Chin S Yi, and published by Schaub's media company Thiccc Boy Studios.
Audience
The show routinely tops the 250,000 mark in monthly downloads.[9]
With early success in attracting a large audience, discussion about the podcast soon focused around an online forum titled The Fighter and the Kid on Reddit, with over 60,000 members.[10] The subtitle of the forum states 'we discuss the podcast here'.
This has led to the formation of an online community of podcast viewers, and an associated subculture, with viewers referring to themselves as 'homeless cats', and the community as P.F. Chang's.[11] Whilst often critical of the podcast hosts, this online community is nevertheless a highly engaged audience.
