The Duke and I is a historical romance novel written by Julia Quinn and published in 2000. It is the first novel of Quinn's series of Regency romances featuring the Bridgerton siblings. It is the basis for the first season of the Netflix series Bridgerton.

Plot
In 19th century Britain, the aristocratic Bridgerton family consists of the widowed Violet, Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton, and her eight children: four sons, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, and Gregory; and four daughters, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, and Hyacinth. When the eldest daughter Daphne Bridgerton enters her third season in 1813, she meets Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings and best friend of her brother, Anthony. The duke is determined not to marry and plots with Daphne to secure his bachelordom, while also obtaining a suitable marriage for her.
Reception
After the release of the Bridgerton Netflix series in December 2020, sales of The Duke and I and other books in Quinn's series surged. The Duke and I was #1 on the New York Times Best Seller List for weeks. In January 2021, The Duke and I was #11 on Publishers Weekly’s mass market bestseller list next week and #9 on the trade paperback list.[1]
