Development

On 26 September 2021, Vijay's 66th film as lead actor was announced with the working title Thalapathy 66. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, it is the first Tamil film produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under Sri Venkateswara Creations,[2][3] and Paidipally's second Tamil film after Thozha (2016).[4] Paidipally said the makers initially intended to announce the project early that year, but had to postpone their plans due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.[5] Vijay was reported to receive a salary of 1.18 billion (US$15 million) for the film.[6] He was also reported to be sporting two looks as the film would be set in two different time periods.[7]

Paidipally wrote the story and screenplay along with Hari and Ashishor Solomon.[3] Raju Murugan was signed as the dialogue writer but he opted out of the project due to other film commitments.[8][9] Murugan was replaced by Vivek for additional screenplay and dialogues.[3] Cinematography will be handled by Kharthik Palani while the film is edited by Praveen K. L.[10] Prabhu Deva is the dance choreographer.[11] Raju described the film as "family-centric" like most of Vijay's films from the 1990s.[12] While several reports anticipated the film to be a Tamil-Telugu bilingual, the makers clarified that the film would be shot only in Tamil.[13] It was also reported that, in contrast to other contemporary Vijay films, this one would not have any action sequences as Paidipally wanted to make it in his own style.[14]

Casting

On 5 April 2022, the birthday of Rashmika Mandanna, it was announced that she would be the lead actress.[15] It is her second Tamil film after Sulthan (2021).[16] R. Sarathkumar joined the cast the following day.[17] In October 2021, Prakash Raj was reported to play a key role in the film, collaborating with Vijay after a decade for the fifth time after Ghilli (2004), Sivakasi (2005), Pokkiri (2007) and Villu (2009).[18][19] On 26 April 2022, Shaam confirmed being a part of the film.[20]

Filming

Principal photography was expected to commence in March 2022,[21] but ultimately did so on 6 April 2022 in Chennai.[22] The first schedule of the film which took place in a specially erected set at a film city in Chennai ended on 15 April.[23][24] Initially, 75% of the shoot was planned to take place in Hyderabad but the production remained in Chennai upon Vijay's request to benefit the local FEFSI members.[25]

Music

The music is composed by S. Thaman in his first collaboration with Vijay.[26]

Release

The film is planned to release in theatres, either on 23 October 2022 during Diwali, or 14 January 2023 during Pongal.[27][28] It is also planned to have a Telugu-dubbed version.[29]

Notes

  1. Vivek is also credited for additional screenplay.
