Development

On June 30, 2020, it was reported that Nickelodeon Animation Studio was developing a computer-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film for Paramount, marking the studio's first CG-theatrical production.[1] Jeff Rowe, best known for co-directing Sony Pictures Animation's The Mitchells vs. the Machines, is set to direct the film, with Brendan O'Brien writing the screenplay.[1] Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver will produce the film through their company, Point Grey Pictures, whom previously worked with O'Brien on Neighbors and its sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.[1] Brian Robbins, the president of Nickelodeon, said that "adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humor and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property".[1] Rowe said that it is an "absolute pleasure" to direct the film, having been a fan of the franchise since childhood.[2] On August 4, 2020, while promoting for his film An American Pickle, Rogen said that the film will both feature elements from the franchise, of which he's been a lifelong fan, and "kind of hone in on" to elements from his previous teenager-centered movies.[3]

In June 2021, Rogen revealed a teaser image through his Twitter page, which contains school notes written by Leonardo, the movie's original release date and details within the image.[4] Later in October of that year, the film's working title was later revealed to be called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Chapter.[5] In February 2022, concept art was released featuring a first-look at the designs of the titular team.[6]

Casting

To keep the authenticity of the Teenage element of the film, Rogen revealed that all four turtles will be voiced by actual teenagers.[7]

Animation

Work on the film's animation had already begun by September 2021.[8] Animation services will be provided by Mikros Image.[9] In an interview production designer Yashar Kassai stated that with modern animation tools and 3D, he feels a responsibility to make something visually ''cool'' for the new movie similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs. the Machines.[10]

Release

The film was originally set to be released on August 11, 2023 by Paramount Pictures.[11][12][13] In January 2022, the film's release date was pushed up a week early to August 4, 2023.[14]
