In the same year of its affiliation to Globo, it made the first big expansion of its local programming, premiering two editions of the now traditional newscast BATV and Jornal da Manhã, its first morning newscast. It was a pioneer, among the Globo affiliates, in the production of telenovelas, premiering on January 7, 1997 the production Danada de Sabida, inspired by the work of João Ubaldo Ribeiro. TV Bahia was also the first to use a helicopter for news coverage in the state, premiering in 2000 the BahiaCop. On December 1, 2008, on the first anniversary of digital terrestrial television in Brazil, it became the first television station in Brazil's Northern and Northeast regions to start broadcasting its programming in this format, making Salvador the seventh capital to receive the technology in the country.

Rede Manchete (1985–1987)
Televisão Bahia Ltda., operator company of TV Bahia, received the concession to explore the broadcasting service of sounds and images in Salvador on May 7, 1984, through a decree from then president João Figueiredo.[4] The creation of TV Bahia was officially announced to the market on January 9, 1985, in a dinner held at the Bahiano Tennis Club. The new TV station in Salvador would be the first partner of Rede Manchete in Bahia. The event included a speech by Rubens Furtado, then general director of the Rio de Janeiro network.[5]
The station signed on for the first time on March 10, 1985, at 6:45 pm, with the transmission of a inaugration ceremony presented by Xuxa Meneghel, then host of the children's program Clube da Criança on Rede Manchete, in addition to the presence of various authorities, such as Governor of Bahia João Durval Carneiro, the former Governor Antônio Carlos Magalhães, in addition to Archbishop of Salvador and Primate of Brazil, Dom Avelar Brandão Vilela.[6] After the ceremony, TV Bahia broadcast its inaugural program: Bahia de Todos os Santos, a documentary directed by the filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos.[7][8] Initially, the station's shareholders were the entrepreneurs ACM Júnior, César Mata Pires and Paulo Augusto Sobral.[9]
TV Globo (1987–present)
On November 10, 1986, Rede Globo made official the non-renewal of its affiliation contract with TV Aratu (channel 4), its then affiliate since 1969, determining that the station cease broadcasting the network's programming on January 20, 1987, after the end of the extension of the end of the partnership.[10] Globo had already expressed to TV Aratu its intention not to renew the affiliation contract on February 24 of that year.[10] Globo's final decision occurred shortly before Organizações Globo's purchase of NEC's Brazilian branch, in December of that year,[11] which made opponents of Antônio Carlos Magalhães raise suspicions that that Roberto Marinho's decision was a way to thank him for a supposed support from the minister in the transaction. On January 13, 1987, congressman Luís Viana Neto, one of the shareholders of TV Aratu, went to Brasília, along with 19 other deputies, to complain to then president José Sarney regarding the situation.[12] On January 15, Judge Luiz Fux, of the 9th Civil Court of Rio de Janeiro, granted TV Aratu an injunction preventing TV Bahia from retransmitting Globo's programming.[13] The injunction was overturned on January 23, after TV Globo filed a writ of mandamus in the Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro to ensure the transmission of its programming by TV Bahia.[14] At 5:58 pm, TV Bahia began to broadcast Globo's programming, after airing a statement informing the viewers about the new affiliation, which was also officially announced in the day's edition of Globo's national newscast Jornal Nacional.[15] TV Aratu, however, ignored the decision, which meant that viewers in Bahia had two channels broadcasting Globo for three days in a row across the state.[16]
By order of the regional direction of National Department of Telecommunications (DENTEL), TV Aratu was forced to stop broadcasting Globo's programming on January 26.[17] The station, then, began to broadcast the programming of Rede Manchete, and continued in court trying to nullify Globo's writ of mandamus. On March 31, judges Jorge Loretti, Narciso Pinto and Astrogildo Freitas of the 5th Civil Chamber of Rio de Janeiro, suspended Globo's writ of mandamus after judging that the network filed an appeal after the deadline.[18] TV Aratu returned, after 64 days, to retransmitting Globo's programs, but TV Bahia did not accept the order immediately and once again both broadcast the same programming.[19] On April 4, however, TV Bahia resumed the broadcast of Manchete's programming.[20] The court battle lasted for another three months, until on July 6, judge Nicolau Mary Júnior granted the injunction in favor of Globo, and TV Bahia definitively resumed the affiliation with the network.[21]
On June 23, 2000, DTH operator Sky started to carry the station's programming, making TV Bahia the fifth Globo station to use this technology, after the network's owned-and-operated stations in Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, in addition to the Rio Grande do Sul affiliate RBS TV.[22] A year later, due to the polemic involving the lack of images of TV Bahia in the coverage of May 16 protests, rumors circulated in the press reported that the channel would lose its affiliation with the network due to a supposed destabilization in the relationship between the groups.[23] The move, however, was denied by Globo, which ratified having a good relationship with Rede Bahia[24] and renewed the contract with the local group on June 21.[25]
On 2008, shareholders of TV Bahia have engaged in a dispute for the control of the station, the television network headed by her, and the communication conglomerate.[26] On June 2012, four years after being defeated by ACM Júnior, who remained in the group chairmanship,[27] César Mata Pires sold his part in the company to Campinas, São Paulo-based Grupo EP, owner of EPTV, network composed of Globo-affiliated stations serving cities of São Paulo and one city of Minas Gerais.[28] Amidst the internal conflicts, there was an investment of R$ 9 million in a new transmitter, a new antenna, installed at a height of 160 meters, in addition to a new master control.[29][30]
During the 2012 municipal elections, on July 21, it was announced that the then candidate for mayor of Salvador, Nelson Pelegrino, would file a lawsuit against TV Bahia, accusing it of benefiting the also candidate at the time, ACM Neto, in an report about the fifth anniversary of the death of senator Antônio Carlos Magalhães, shown on the previous day at the noon newscast Bahia Meio Dia, due to the fact that he was interviewed and participated in the occasion.[31] On August 3, however, the Electoral Court of Brazil ruled the accusation as "unfounded". According to Ângela Bacellar Batista, judge of the 18th Electoral Zone, there was no breach of isonomy, as the then-candidate Mário Kertész, who was running for the same elective position, was also interviewed and participated in the same report.[32]
"The simple fact that the TV station is owned by the candidate's family does not imply an offense to the principle of isonomy and, in this case, the report is included within the freedom of the press, essential to the democratic rule of law, whose dissemination of the manifestation of those present at the ceremony, purpose of the report, cannot be confused with the prohibition of article 45 of Law 9,504/97".
— Ângela Bacellar Batista
In the 2014 edition of the National Programming Award, held by Rede Globo, TV Bahia was awarded as the station with the largest audience among the affiliates of the Rio de Janeiro network throughout Brazil.[33] In the same award, it was recognized for the call for the broadcast of the match between Juazeirense and Juazeiro, considered the best of its kind among the network's partners, and for the entertainment program Mosaico Baiano, which was one of the three best regional online programs of the year.[33]
In May 2019, Rede Bahia carried out layoffs of several journalists and other employees of TV Bahia. The reason would be the losses the group went through in 2018. Documentation Center (CEDOC) and marketing team employees were fired, in addition to veteran newscaster Anna Valéria, who had been at the station for 31 years.[34] In the same year, on December, TV Bahia started to live broadcast its programming through Globoplay, Grupo Globo's streaming platform.[35]

Analog-to-digital conversion
In November 2008, TV Bahia started its digital transmissions in high definition (HD) on an experimental basis on channel 29 UHF, and on December 1 of the same year, it officially launched it, thus becoming a pioneer in terrestrial digital transmissions in Salvador, Bahia and the Northeast Region of Brazil, making the capital of Bahia the seventh city to receive digital television in Brazil, exactly one year after the official launch in the country.[37][38] On November 25, 2013, it began broadcasting its local newscasts in HDTV.[39]
TV Bahia shut down its analog signal, over VHF channel 11, on September 27, 2017, as part of the federally mandated transition from analog to digital television.[40] The station's digital signal remains on its pre-transition UHF channel 29, using PSIP to display TV Bahia's virtual channel as 11 on digital television receivers.
The station broadcast a local generation of the match between Cruzeiro x Flamengo, valid for the Brazil Cup final, narrated by sports anchor Thiago Mastroianni, as well as live participations from the station's master control with reporter Giana Mattiazzi, who showed the signal being interrupted at 11:59 PM, after completion of the match, and being replaced by a notice from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) and ANATEL about the switch-off.[41]
Programming
Entertainment programming

TV Bahia broadcasts two variety shows on Saturdays. Conexão Bahia deals with themes related to the culture and the daily life of Bahians, being hosted by playwright Aldri Anunciação.[42] At Mosaico Baiano, presented by Pablo Vasconcelos, curiosities, clips, documentaries, special series, cinema tips, among others, are exhibited.[43]
Were part of TV Bahia's schedule: The interview program hosted by Michelle Marie Magalhães, Michelle Marie Entrevista (which featured reports by Wagner Moura),[44] the auditorium program Arerê Geral (with Jackson Costa and Flávia Mendonça as presenters and direction by Fernando Guerreiro), premiered on January 18, 2001,[45] and Na Carona (hosted by Liliane Reis).[46][47][48] On September 9, 2017, Aprovado, presented by Jackson Costa, was discontinued, and in its place, Conexão Bahia premiered on September 16, presented by Renata Menezes and Aldri Anunciação.[49] Renata left the program and the station at February 18, 2019.[50]
TV Bahia was the first Rede Globo affiliate to produce locally a telenovela. The attraction, entitled Danada de Sabida, premiered on January 7, 1997.[51] Broadcast exclusively in the state, the production was inspired by the book Já Podeis da Pátria Filhos, by the writer João Ubaldo Ribeiro, having been recorded in the cities of Cachoeira, São Francisco do Conde and São Gonçalo dos Campos.[52]
On January 5, 2019, was broadcast the first edition of musical program Sente o Som, hosted by Camila Marinho and directed by Marcela Amorim. The seven programs of the first season were scheduled for interviews with artists from Bahia and musical performances.[53] In the same year, four editions of the program were broadcast in Portugal, as part of the special programming of carnival on the cable channel Globo Now. In Portugal, the program was aired from February 26 to 28, at 20h50.[54]
During the Junine festivities of 2020, the station was criticized for the choice of Léo Santana, a pagode singer, for the presentation in São João do Nordeste, the São João festivities special program from Globo's owned-and-operated flagship station for the Northeast of Brazil based in Recife, Pernambuco, TV Globo Nordeste. Artists from different musical genres criticized the decision.[55] In a statement, TV Bahia ratified that it gave space to several other artists during its programming for the month of June, through "special programs, reports and interviews about the São João festivities".[56]
During 2020, TV Bahia produced several special attractions, aired on Saturdays. The station's first production was the special program Sessão Pet, presented by Pablo Vasconcelos and his pet dog, "Lilica", consisting in content about pet care, as well as stories of owners with their pets. Premiered on October 24, the attraction had three episodes.[57] On November 28, Na Carona returned to the schedule after 13 years of its extinction. Also hosted by Pablo Vasconcelos, the relaunch program was dedicated to the city of Porto Seguro,[58]
On December 11, 2020, the special program Conversa Preta, dedicated to debates on racism and representativeness and produced by black professionals from Rede Bahia, won the award for "best regional special program" among the attractions of this category produced by Rede Globo affiliates.[59] The production was competing with programs from TV Sergipe (affiliate for the homonymous state) and Rede Amazônica (affiliate for the North Region).[60] The first season of the program had aired in August,[61] and the second was shown between October and December 2021.[62][63]
Special programming

TV Bahia annually covers the Carnival of Salvador in February or March, with the transmission of the special program Bahia Folia, occupying several spaces of TV Globo programming and local programming during the period, in addition to participation in the national network shows. Since 1994, the station has been promoting the Bahia Folia Trophy, a award that elects the most successful hit of the Bahian Carnival by popular vote.[64]
Between 1999 and 2014, the station also live broadcast the Salvador Summer Festival, promoted by iContent, which is a subsidiary of Rede Bahia.[65] In 2015, the event started to be broadcast by the Canais Globo's entertainment subscription channel Multishow, but TV Bahia still promotes the event in its schedule, in addition to airing special programs with the best moments.[66]
Sports programming
TV Bahia is currently responsible for locally generating part of the transmissions of the Bahia's soccer clubs' matches for the Brazil Cup and Brazilian Championship (A and B series), when Globo holds the broadcast rights of these competitions. The main sports broadcasting team of the network is composed of Thiago Mastroianni as sportscaster,[67] comments by Gustavo Castelucci,[68] in addition to reports by Danilo Ribeiro, Renan Pinheiro, and Sérgio Pinheiro.[69][70]
From 2011 to 2020, TV Bahia was the official station for the Bahia Football Championship,[71] replacing TV Itapoan, which had been broadcasting it since 2007.[72] The station doesn't signed a contract with the Football Association of Bahia for 2021, and was replaced by TVE Bahia (channel 10), an TV Brasil-affiliated public television station, which became the championship's official station for the year.[73][74]
On March 2, 2022, it was announced that TV Bahia, as well as pay-TV channels and streaming platforms of Grupo Globo, would broadcast matches of Vitória in the Brazilian Championship's C series. The club used a clause from its contract with the Rio de Janeiro-based conglomerate, based on the Principal Law.[75] With this agreement, the matches played in the Barradão would be broadcast exclusively by Globo outlets, including the affiliated stations of Rede Bahia de Televisão, while the other matches would remain with the DAZN service, which has the rights of the competition for 2022.[75]
News operation
TV Bahia currently broadcasts 23 hours, 20 minutes of locally produced newscasts each week (with 4 hours, 15 minutes each weekday and 2 hours, 5 minutes on Saturdays). The station also produces the 25-minute local sports show Globo Esporte Bahia, from Monday to Saturday, right after the newscast Bahia Meio Dia.[76]
The first TV newscast on TV Bahia was Bahia em Manchete, broadcast at 7:15 pm,[77] which premiered on March 11, 1985, and was presented by Globo's former newscaster Paulo Gil.[78] The station also produced Manchete Esportiva Bahia, anchored by Ivan Pedro. It was the local edition of Rede Manchete's sports program.[79] A new program entered the station's schedule three months later: the interview program Bahia Debate, presented by the then journalist of Rede Manchete, Ney Gonçalves Dias. On the program, which aired on Thursdays, he interviewed the candidates for mayor of Salvador in the municipal elections that year.[80] In July 1986, TV Bahia hired journalist Kátia Guzzo, presenter of variety program Mulher Total on then-SBT affiliate TV Itapoan (channel 5, now RecordTV Itapoan), to co-anchor Bahia Agora, the station's first noon newscast, accompanying journalist Paulo Brandão.[81]
On the night of January 23, 1987, soon after the beginning of the affiliation with Globo, TV Bahia debuted the local nightly newscast BATV 2ª Edição,[82] which, like Bahia em Manchete, was anchored by Paulo Gil.[83] The following day, on January 24, the noon newscast BATV 1ª Edição premiered, replacing Bahia Agora, being anchored by Paulo Brandão.[82] On the same day, the station also replaced Manchete Esportiva Bahia with the 3 minute-long local sports news block of Globo Esporte.[82] The station's first local morning production, the newscast Jornal da Manhã, anchored by Kátia Guzzo, is broadcast for the first time on January 26.[81] In the same year, the then station's reporter, Cristina Barude,[84] replaced Paulo, which went to BATV 2ª Edição, in the presentation of the evening news.[85]
Jornal da Manhã underwent its first change of anchors four years after its debut, in 1991, when Kátia Guzzo was replaced by Regina Coeli.[86] The morning show began to be presented in duo on 1993, when Regina started being accompanied by Casemiro Neto.[87] Also in 1993, TV Bahia re-released Bahia Agora, this time aired in two editions, replacing Jornal da Manhã and BATV 1ª Edição.[88] The newscast was presented by the respective anchors of the replaced news programs in each edition.[89] On July 1995, the program was reformulated, adopting a "variety magazine" format. Was anchored by Anna Valéria.[88]
With the launch of then-anchor Emmerson José's candidacy for city council in Salvador on the 1996 municipal elections,[90] Kátia Guzzo replaced him on BATV 2ª Edição.[91] Regina Coeli took Kátia's place on BATV 1ª Edição,[92] In early 1997, Regina Coeli left TV Bahia to work at the newspaper A Tarde,[93] and was replaced by Casemiro Neto.[94] On August 25, Bahia Meio Dia, a noon newscast, premiered replacing Bahia Agora and BATV 1ª Edição. The new newscast brought together, in its presentation, the anchors of both replaced programs, also counting with Genildo Lawinscky's comments.[95] The following year, Jornal da Manhã also underwent changes. The then anchor Denis Rivera, who had been on the program since 1996, was replaced by journalist Patrícia Nobre, who was transferred from TV Verdes Mares, a Globo-affiliated station serving Fortaleza, Ceará.[96][97]
On August 29, 1999, TV Bahia premiered the journalistic Bahia Rural, with information about agribusiness and the mores of the interior of Bahia, presented by Valber Carvalho.[98] In the same year, Bahia Agora returned to the station's schedule, this time as a news bulletin broadcast during commercial breaks,[99] having been produced until 2001.[100] In 2000, journalist Fabiana Ferraz was transferred from TV Norte (now TV São Francisco), a sister Globo-affiliated station based in Juazeiro, to TV Bahia, and began to co-anchor Bahia Meio Dia alongside Casemiro Neto.[87]
TV Bahia was the first television station in the state to use a helicopter for news coverage.[101] The aircraft, which began to be used in 2000, was called BahiaCop, and was used for live traffic bulletins, as well as reports and coverage that required aerial images.[102] A year later, Bahia Meio Dia had its anchors changed, and Fabiana Ferraz's position was taken by Paula Trainer, transferred from GloboNews in 1998.[103] She stayed with the station until August 2003, when was replaced by Patrícia Nobre.[96] In the same month, Adriana Quadros (then with Salvador-licensed radio station Itapoan FM 97.5)[104] was hired by TV Bahia, and replaced Patrícia at Jornal da Manhã.[105]
After 23 years directing the news department of TV Bahia, journalist Carlos Libório retired and left the position on March 13, 2008. He was replaced by Roberto Appel, former journalism manager at RBS TV.[106] New changes were made to the station's newscasts two months after the director change, on May 5, 2008: Bahia Meio Dia was once again anchored by a pair; Patrícia Nobre, who was presenting the newscast on her own after Casemiro Neto's departure (he had debuted his journalistic popular program Que Venha o Povo on already SBT-affiliated station at the time, TV Aratu, on February 25),[107] was now accompanied by journalist Jony Torres (then with TV Cultura-affiliated TVE Bahia). In BATV, recently-hired journalist Jefferson Beltrão (then at already RecordTV owned-and-operated station TV Itapoan) began to accompany Kátia Guzzo.[108] In August 2009, Adriana Quadros left TV Bahia and was later rehired by TV Itapoan,[109] being replaced by Georgina Maynart at Jornal da Manhã.[110]

On December 3, 2010, exactly three years after its debut as a scheduled program, Bahia Agora was last aired in this format and returned to be a news update bulletim due to programming changes of Globo, which included an expansion of Jornal da Manhã, which began to be broadcast until 7:30 am.[111]
During the carnival of 2014, TV Bahia again debuted a helicopter for news coverage, debuting RedeCop.[112] The aircraft provided services to the station until June 30, 2016, when the contract with the São Paulo-based company Time News, responsible for the equipment, was terminated.[113]
As well as other affiliates that aired local programming right after Fantástico on Sundays, the last edition of the journalistic show Rede Bahia Revista, produced since 1998, was aired on January 18, 2015. The program left the schedule due to changes in Rede Globo's programming for the time slot.[114][115] Other changes were made on February 20. Camila Marinho debuted at the command of BATV, in place of Kátia Guzzo,[116] who became a special reporter for the station 1 month later.[117] With that, Silvana Freire was transferred to Bahia Meio Dia, being replaced in Jornal da Manhã by reporter Jessica Smetak, who had already replaced the titleholder during vacation in 2014.[118] On March 2, 2015, Jefferson Beltrão was fired from TV Bahia after 7 years, and Camila began to anchor BATV alone.[119]
In 2017, TV Bahia, until then the absolute leader in audience, began to compete directly, in measurements by Kantar IBOPE Media, with RecordTV Itapoan in Salvador, during the exhibition of the journalistic local program Balanço Geral BA, hosted by José Eduardo (known as "Bocão").[120] On the same year, with the intention of reformulating the department's management and improving its ratings, TV Bahia hired Eurico Meira da Costa (formerly with the Globo affiliate in Santa Catarina, NSC TV) as news director,[121] after 17-year running news director Roberto Appel retired.[122] One of the main actions taken by management to improve the channel's noon ratings began on November 26, 2018, with the remotion of Globo's health program Bem Estar in the weekly schedule to increase the airing time of Bahia Meio Dia, which started from 30 to 15 minutes earlier from other local TV newscasts programs of Rede Globo affiliates at the noon.[123]
On February 26, 2018, the station committed a gaffe, where it accidentally showed the body of a dead man during a report on Jornal da Manhã, which is not normally practiced in the station's editorial line. On the occasion, reporter Vanderson Nascimento, in a live link, spoke about a body that had been found on Vasco da Gama Avenue, in Salvador. Beside him, in the background of the image, appeared the corpse, which remained on the screen for 40 seconds, when the reporter was alerted and positioned himself in front of the body, so that it left the camera frame.[124]
In order to make Bahia Meio Dia more competitive against the competition, TV Bahia hired, on March 7, 2018, Jessica Senra (then journalist of RecordTV Itapoan) to anchor the program. It debuted two months later, on May 7, along with several format changes.[125] Jessica's debut contributed to the news program reaching the audience leadership in the period from January to May of that year.[126] With the change in the afternoon newscast, Fernando Sodake, then the noon newscast's anchor, was transferred to BATV, replacing Camila Marinho, who got emotional on her farewell from the newscast on May 4.[127] Silvana Freire became an occasional anchor, and returned as a principal anchor of a newscast on August 25, 2018, with the debut of Bom Dia Sábado, a morning newscast broadcast on Saturdays.[128]
After two decades of work in the station, on June 4, 2019, Valber Carvalho ends his long time host contract after two decades of work at the station.[129] TV Bahia announced a new version of Bahia Rural, with new graphics and set, this time presented by Georgina Maynart (who was already on the program's team as a reporter) and José Raimundo, a reporter for the station known for making special reports for the network's programs, such as Globo Repórter. The new format of the program debuted on September 1 in that year.[130]
On 2020 and 2021, the station's journalism department lost names that were prominent in its programming. On January 10, 2020, Silvana Freire, anchor of Bom Dia Sábado, is fired after 8 years of work in TV Bahia's news team.[131] On January 7, 2021, José Raimundo announced on his social networks that he was leaving TV Bahia after 31 years.[132]
Amidst the celebration of the 10 years of the Bahian version of the website G1, on March 31, 2021, TV Bahia launched the local version of the 1-minute news bulletin G1 em 1 Minuto, highlighting the news from the G1 Bahia website, anchored by the website reporter, Gabriel Gonçalves.[133] The debut took place in celebration of 10 years of the local version of Globo's news website. Shortly after, in April 19, the anchoring of the bulletin began to be shared with Itana Alencar, also a G1 Bahia reporter.[134]
On December 12, 2021, Camila Marinho, accompanied by film reporter Cleriston Santana, was attacked by supporters and members of president Jair Bolsonaro's security team as she tried to cover his visit to the city of Itamaraju, in the region of extreme south of Bahia, due to heavy rains that wreaked havoc in the city and in the region.[135] She had her microphone damaged by the municipality's secretary of works, Antonio Charbel,[136] and was also the victim of an attempted rear naked choke hold by one of the security guards, in addition to having a stolen fanny pack, which was later retrieved by another colleague.[137] Reporters Xico Lopes and Dário Cerqueira, from TV Aratu, were with TV Bahia reporters, and were also attacked.[138] The case was even reflected in national TV news programs on TV Globo, which repudiated the attacks on both teams.[139] Rede Bahia also released a statement repudiating the action.[140]
