Career
Synik began rapping driven by a desire to tell his own story through hip-hop music. With a largely introspective approach, his subject matter is diverse, ranging from personal reflections to politically-charged lyrics.[1] His releases include The Beta Version EP (demo), God Within, as well as the debut album Syn City which received three awards at the Zimbabwean Hip Hop Awards in 2012, winning every category in which he was nominated.[2][3] From Harare’s spoken-word and hip-hop scene, Synik went on to perform at various festivals in Zimbabwe and other African countries such as Shoko Festival.[4]
In 2019, Synik released The Soulsteez EP with Austrian producer Phil Chronics. Having performed on various stages in Portugal including festivals such as Outjazz, Festival Todos,[5] +Jazz (Acores),[6] as well as being featured on Portugese band f.e.r.a’s album Space (2020). in 2022, Synik released his second studio album A Travel Guide for the Broken [7] for which he released the single Rukuvhute (feat. Vusa Mkhaya). The album enlists a global array of musicians and contributors such as Vivalda Dula and has received positive reviews [8][9][10] in its illustration on the immigrant experience. In the same year, he released a concept EP, entitled The Industry.
Along with fellow rapper Outspoken Tha Humble Neophyte (Tongai Leslie Makawa), Synik was the subject of a 2017 research paper that puts forth that the music of these two rappers is transcendental in its depiction and critique of life in contemporary urban Zimbabwe.[11] The paper focused on his 2012 album Syn City.
