Stephen Barth

Stephen Barth is an American lawyer, award-winning professor,[1] author, keynote speaker and entrepreneur. He is a professor of leadership and hospitality law at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. He is the author of the e-book Intelligent Emotions: On Self Responsibility, Owning Our Emotional Power, and Changing Our Reactions[2] and the co-author of Hospitality Law, 5th Edition[3] and Restaurant Law Basics.[4] In 2000, Barth founded HospitalityLawyer.com along with the annual Hospitality Law Conference. In 2011, he founded the Global Travel Risk Management Summit Series. His hospitality and travel interests combined with his legal background enabled him to make a positive impact in the hospitality and travel industries, including the development of hospitality law as a specialty area of the law.[5] Through his articles, presentations, and conferences, Barth has been influential in creating awareness for the concept of reasonable care for the business travel and hospitality communities.[6][7][8]

Barth was born in Dallas, Texas, USA, on August 27, 1956 to Carol Caroli Barth and Paul Owen Barth. He is of Italian, German, and English descent. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics, a master's in communications, and a doctorate in jurisprudence, all from Texas Tech University.

Career

Hospitality industry

Barth spent over twenty years working, managing, owning, and consulting in the restaurant and night club industries.

While working in the hospitality industry to implement his education and post-graduate life, Barth attended law school and was licensed by the State Bar of Texas in 1984. He was also a founding member of the Hospitality Industry Bar Association. Barth's articles (100+) on legal issues are regularly published in a variety of leading hospitality publications. Notable articles include "Litigation Trends: Looking Ahead Into 2020" published by Hotel News Now,[9] "Food-and-beverage legal compliance worth the time, money" published by Hotel Management,[10] and "HOSPITALITY LAW: Know what to expect in a personal injury case" published by Hospitality Leader Online.[11] Barth assisted in developing the Safety and Security Seminar and the Responsible Service of Alcohol program for the National Restaurant Association.[5]

Litigation support

Barth has and continues to be designated frequently as an expert in litigation involving the responsible service of alcohol as well as safety and security aspects in the hospitality industry, including high profile cases such as Andrews v. Marriott International, Inc., 2016 IL APP (1ST) 122731[12][13] and the Melissa Blaylock v. Schwartz Brothers Restaurants/SBR Holdings, L.L.C./WAS, Inc., and Bruce Greene, No. 16-2-07043-4-SEA.

Academia

Barth's thirty+ year career at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, University of Houston, begun in 1990, focuses on researching and teaching hospitality law and leadership. Previously, he taught Legal Aspects of Hospitality Management at Texas Tech University. He was also selected as an instructor by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association to teach its Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) program, which provided a disciplined pedagogy to hospitality and culinary faculty.[14]

In 2000 Barth founded HospitalityLawyer.com, an online resource for the hospitality industry's legal, safety, and security solutions. HospitalityLawyer.com hosts two industry conferences, The Global Travel Risk Summit series, an intensive educational conference surrounding a business's "Duty of Care" to mobile employees,[15] and The Hospitality Law Conference,[16] each year in Houston, Texas, both of which serve as an intellectual convergence of hospitality and travel professionals.[17][18][19]

Professional speaker

Barth was a longtime member of the National Speakers Association and frequent keynote speaker. His presentations focus on topics including emotional intelligence, emotionally intelligent leadership, positive leadership techniques, mutual meeting contracts, and methods for mitigating liability in the hospitality and business travel industries.[20][21] Barth has given over 500+ presentations to a variety of audiences and organizations.
