Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (born 16 June 1983) is the Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, and member of the Dubai Council. She is also the daughter of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Her Highness has been actively engaged in the arts and culture sectors in the UAE since the inception of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and holds many positions across the arts and culture landscape in the UAE.

She also advocates for the advancement of literature and strives to sustain a culture of reading. She has several initiatives including a recent one to renovate and modernise Dubai's Public Libraries,[1] aiming to transform them into havens of lifelong learning, collaboration and creativity.

Her Highness is married to Sheikh Faisal Saud Khalid Al Qasimi with whom she has 3 children.[2]

Early Life

HH Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was born on 16 June 1983 in Dubai, to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, and Hind bint Maktoum Al Maktoum.

She attended Zayed University, where she graduated with an Executive MBA (with Honours),[3] and a graduate degree in Business Sciences specialised in Marketing.

Growing up, Sheikha Latifa was influenced by her father’s passion for horses and poetry and grew up spending a lot of time horse-riding. She was also exposed to art at a young age – as her aunt and older sister introduced her to sketching and painting at the age of five.

As a teenager, she fell in love with martial arts, first attending Kung Fu lessons with her sisters, and later achieved a taekwondo black belt.

Roles and positions

Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was appointed Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) on 5 September 2019, after holding many positions at the authority since joining the organisation in 2008. Her Highness is also a member of the Dubai Council and chair and patron of several key initiatives. Some of her titles include:

Achievements

As Chairperson of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority Her Highness launched Dubai Culture's Six-Year Strategic Roadmap, which aims to position Dubai as a global centre for culture and nurture the creativity talent developing in the region.[11]

Her Highness has also oversees a number of initiatives to promote and encourage the growth of the cultural and creative industries across the region. These include “The Dubai Creative Economy Strategy” [12] as well as a number of ‘Majilis’ meetings and sessions where she would meet with key players from the sector and hear their concerns.[13]

Her Highness takes part at different conference and platforms. In 2020, she spoke at the Global Women's Forum 2020[14] and she also spoke at the World Conference on Creative Economy 2021 (WCCE), held at Expo 2020 in Dubai.[15] HH Sheikha Latifa was part of a “sofa session” titled ‘Accessible Creativity: Inclusivity & Diversity’, with Becky Anderson, Anchor of CNN’s Connect the World and CNN Abu Dhabi Managing Editor.

She has also featured on the front cover or Vogue Arabia 50th issue [16] Her Highness also holds a black belt in taekwondo.[17]

Career

Through her role as Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, and member of the Dubai Council, she works on fostering an environment of creative production in Dubai and place the city as the leading cultural hub in the region.

She is one of a few women from the Al Maktoum family to choose to be in the public eye, starting her career with an official government role in line with her beliefs on the importance of giving back to the community.[18]

Her Highness interned at Dubai Holding before joining the newly incepted Dubai Culture and Arts Authority in 2008 [18] and subsequently was appointed chairperson in 2019. [19]

With people at the heart of her vision, Sheikha Latifa is at the forefront of Dubai’s key socio-cultural initiatives. These collectively contribute to the steady growth of the UAE’s cultural ecosystem and infrastructure and their integration across Dubai’s other key sectors[20].  These include:

Education

Sheikha Latifa holds an Executive MBA with Honours (2005-2007) and a graduate degree in Business Sciences specialised in Marketing from Zayed University (2001-2004) [3]

Awards

First Arab Lady Of The Year Award in 2021 In 2021, Her Highness was awarded the First Arab Lady Of The Year Award in 2021 which recognises the role she has played in the resurgence of Dubai's cultural and creative sector and her support for innovative cultural initiatives that have enriched the local and regional cultural landscape [25]
