Schmitt family

Schmitt or von Schmitt is a Bavarian noble family originating in the Franconian region of the Kingdom of Bavaria, today in modern Germany. The family has been prominent in business, and was introduced to nobility by Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria[1]

History

The first known ancestor was Johannes Kaspar I. Schmitt (d. 1721–72) who was from Bamberg in Germany. His descendants Josef von Schmitt (1838–1908), as well as his brother received German nobility, and the family was elevated to a German noble family. Josef von Schmitt and Gottfried von Schmitt (1827–1908), were elevated to the hereditary title of Ritter in 1889 and 1896 respectively.

Another notable family member was Ritter Josef Schmitt, Bavarian privy councilor. Alongside Gottfried Schmitt (1865–1919), a German politician and member of the Reichsgerichtsrat.
