San Lorenzo Della Costa, more commonly known locally as just San Lorenzo, is a village and frazione in the commune of Santa Margherita Ligure in the province of Genoa in Liguria, Italy. It is located on Via Aurelia adjacent to the border with Camogli.[1][2]

History

San Lorenzo mainly followed the historical events of today's municipality of Santa Margherita Ligure, separated, by decree of Napoleon Bonaparte himself during the French domination in the territories of the former Republic of Genoa, in 1798 from the municipality of Rapallo. Already part of the podestà of Rapallo since the 13th century, and then of the subsequent captaincy of Rapallo from 1608, the municipality of San Lorenzo, and the current district of San Siro, were included in the canton of Santa Margherita of the Ligurian Republic on 18 July 1798.

The suppression of the simple municipalities of San Lorenzo, San Siro, Nozarego and Portofino was decided on 5 April 1799, inserting the first two localities into the new municipality of Santa Margherita and the remaining nuclei into the municipality of San Giacomo di Corte. It was during the First French Empire that the Municipality of Porto Napoleone was established on 22 December 1812, incorporating all the hamlets and villages in the Santa Margherita district.

Today San Lorenzo is part of the municipality of Santa Margherita Ligure, which took this name in 1863 with the royal decree of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy.[3]

Monuments

The parish church of San Lorenzo, originally built in Romanesque style, the current marble façade was created in 1902. It has a three-nave interior with eight side chapels. Among the paintings and sculptures preserved is the famous triptych of St Andrew in the third chapel of the left-hand nave.

Oratory of the Suffrage and Death, 18th century.

Infrastructure and transportation

The hamlet of San Lorenzo is crossed by the main road 1 Via Aurelia, on which urban and suburban transport services are provided by the public transport company AMT.

Until 1946, when it was decommissioned, the hamlet of San Lorenzo also had a railway stop along the Genoa-Pisa line, located at the bottom of the valley in correspondence of the current "Eugenio Broccardi" sports field of Santa Margherita Ligure, in the area now occupied by the current electricity substation.
