Rothy's uses thread made from recycled plastic bottles and post-consumer recycled materials to knit its items.[4][5] Rothy’s 3D knits its shoes and handbags to shape, cutting waste.[6] As of 2020, the company had repurposed 50 million water bottles in the making of their products.[7] In March 2021, Rothy’s committed to closing its loop within three years, launching a shoe recycling program, achieving zero waste and LEED certification at its factory and reaching carbon neutrality.[8] As of 2022, over 100 million plastic bottles have been repurposed to make their products.[9] Additionally, Rothy’s has recycled over 20,000 pairs of shoes.[10]
In December 2021, Rothy’s was valued at $1 billion when Alpargatas, the Brazilian owner of Havaianas, took a 49.9% stake in the company.[11]
History
The company began in 2012 with Stephen Hawthornthwaite, an investment banker, and Roth Martin, a creative and gallerist. Their goal was to create a stylish and comfortable women's flat shoe from single-use plastic, reducing the excess that occurs with a traditional shoe making process.[12]
There was significant delay between the founding of the company and the launch due to the complexity of making the product. He states that he drew inspiration from companies like Patagonia in making shoes using sustainable materials.[13]
Rothy’s launched in September 2016, offering its first two styles, The Flat and The Point, directly from its website.[14] In January 2017, Rothy's opened its own factory in Guangzhou, China, which today spans 300,000 square feet.[15][16][17]
By 2018, the brand had sold a million pairs, generating $140 million in revenue. In 2019, it surpassed 1.4 million customers—a 105% increase from the year prior. In March 2020, the brand launched a new category, handbags.[18][16] In 2021, Rothy’s expanded into the Men’s category with a sneaker and driving loafer.[2]
Investors in the company include Goldman Sachs and Lightspeed Venture Partners, who have invested $35 million and $5 million respectively,[19] and $2 million in convertible notes from Finn Capital Partners, M13 and Grace Beauty Capital.[20] In December 2021, Alpargatas, the Brazilian owner of Havaianas, invested $200 million in cash, followed by a purchase of $275 million of shares, acquiring a 49.9% stake in the company and resulting in a valuation of $1 billion.[11]
Due to competitors copying the design and selling the shoes for cheaper prices, the company has made a significant effort to protect the brand from counterfeits and imitators. As of April 2021, the company had pending or recently resolved litigation against Birdies, Steve Madden, OESH Shoes and Giesswein.[21][13]
Design and Product
Rothy's make a number of shoe silhouettes, including The Flat, The Point, The Loafer, The Sneaker, The Chelsea, The Mary Jane, and The Lace Up and more.[19]
Rothy's products are made from 100% recycled plastic water bottles and post-consumer recycled materials.[22] During the manufacturing process, the water bottles are hot washed and sterilized. Chips of plastic are melted down into pellets, stretched into fibers, and given air treatment until they entwine. Rothy's knitting machines then knit the upper part of the shoe in 14 to 24 minutes, depending on the design. They are then sewn to the sole by hand, paired with recycled foam and recycled rubber soles. According to Business of Fashion Rothy's range caters to women looking for an alternative to sneakers or ballet shoes. The Point is the best-selling of the flats, retailed at $145.[23]
Business Insider states that the shoes are very light and flexible with no hard seams or edges, and also notes that they are moisture-wicking, so function throughout the year with sweat or in the rain.[22] The shoes are machine washable and can be air dried in 40 minutes.[17]
On March 2, 2020, the company announced the launch of handbags made with ocean-bound marined plastic.[24]
In May 2021, Rothy’s expanded into the Men’s category with The RS01 Sneaker and The Driving Loafer.[2] The Driving Loafer has been recognized as a TIME 2021 Magazine Best Invention,[25] and The RS01 Sneaker was named Men’s Health Most Innovative Shoe.[26]
The company has also ventured into the children's market,[27] launching a children's version of the brand's popular loafer silhouette in 2018 and slip-on sneakers for kids in March 2019.[23][28] The sneakers come in both solids and unisex prints.[29]
Reception
The shoes have been well received by fashion critics, particularly for their comfortability and durability.[30] Spotting Katie Holmes in Rothy’s Point, Vogue called Rothy’s “the perfect ballet flat”.[31] Other celebrity fans include Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington [E!], and Meghan Markle wore Rothy's in October 2018 while on a visit to Australia with Prince Harry.[32][33] Robin Hilmantel of Women's Health described the shoes as "comfortable as they are chic".[34] Kavita Varma-White of Today described Rothy's as the "perfect travel shoe".[35]
TIME Magazine named Rothy’s one of the Most Influential Companies of 2021.[36] In 2020, Rothy’s wasincluded in Fast Company's list of "The 10 most innovative style companies of 2020".[37] Rothy’s has also been recognized as a Best Place to Work by Inc. Magazine.[38]
