Robert Miles (sociologist)
Robert Miles, also known as Bob Miles, is a British sociologist.[1] Miles has served as a professor of sociology at University of Glasgow and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[2][3]
Early life
Miles was educated at Dover Grammar School for Boys.[3] He graduated with Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the University of Bath in 1973.[3]
In 1986, he completed his PhD from the University of Glasgow.[4]
Career
Miles joined the University of Glasgow as a lecturer in 1978.[3]
In 1982, his book, Racism and migrant labour, was published which was reviewed by notable journals.[5][6]
Between 1992 and 1997, he served as a visiting professor at Glasgow Caledonian University.[4]
In 1997, he became Associate Dean for the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Glasgow where he served till 2000.[4] Between 1993 and 1999, he was the head of the Department of Sociology.[4]
In 2000, he left the University of Glasgow and joined University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a professor of sociology.[3]
In 2017, he retired from the work.[4]
Work
Miles is best known for his Marxist critique of racism theories, particularly which ignore migration labour relation with racialisation processes.[7]
