Psychofreak

"Psychofreak" (stylized in all lowercase) is a song by Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello, featuring vocals from fellow American singer-songwriter Willow. It was released through Epic Records as the third single from Cabello's third studio album, Familia, on April 8, 2022, alongside the album.

Background

While recording "Psychofreak", Cabello had feelings of vulnerability and embarrassment. She felt "very anxious" in the studio and improvised a lyric. When she finished recording the track, she felt "terrible and embarrassed", but she later stated it was one of her favorites. The song is based on the singer's anxiety and the struggle of trying to be present despite feeling paranoid or insecure.[1]

Composition and lyrics

"Psychofreak" is a downtempo trip hop and dark pop song that is set in the key of B♭ major with a tempo of 90 beats per minute.[2][3][4] In an interview with Reuters on April 8, 2022, the same day thay the song and album were released, Cabello confirmed that one line in the song was about her leaving American girl group Fifth Harmony ("I don't blame the girls for how it went down"), adding that "that song is basically about anxiety and all of the different things that have made up like my journey with anxiety and starting off really young in the industry".[5] Nick Levine of NME felt that the "chart-bound" song "proves it's still possible to write a smart and original song about mental health in 2022". The "airy vocal hook" was compared to American singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega's single, "Tom's Diner", from her second studio album, Solitude Standing (1987). It sees Cabello sing about dissociation by using satire: "Sometimes I don't trust the way I feel / On my Instagram talking about 'I'm healed'".[6]

Live performances

"Psychofreak" received its debut performance on TikTok's Familia: Welcome to the Family concert on April 7, 2022, alongside performances of the rest of the album's songs.[7] The performance saw Cabello in a neon yellow outfit singing the song against a shifting black-and-white backdrop with backup dancers dressed in the same colours.[8] The song was performed by Cabello and Willow together for the first time on Saturday Night Live on April 9, 2022, where Cabello was the musical guest.[9][10] She went on to perform the song on The Today Show on April 12, 2022 as part of their Citi Concert Series.[11]
