Provincial Assembly of the Punjab crisis
Provincial Assembly of the Punjab crisis began on 28 March 2022, when Usman Buzdar tendered his resignation as Chief Minister at the request of Prime Minister Imran Khan due to the political crisis surrounding the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan.[1] On 1 April 2022, his resignation was accepted by then Governor of Punjab.[2]
Timeline
- 2 April – After the resignation of Buzdar, the meeting of the Punjab Assembly was convened on 2 April 2022 to elect a new Chief Minister.[3] Meanwhile Muhammad Khan Bhatti, Secretary of the Provincial Assembly said that the candidates would submit their nomination papers today while voting for the election of a new Chief Minister is likely to take place tomorrow or Monday.[4][5][6]
- 3 April – The session of Punjab Assembly which started late and last only for 6 minutes under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari, was adjourned till April 6 as the Deputy Speaker attributed the adjournment to the worst commotion.[7]
- 5 April – Deputy Speaker Mazari issued a statement to convene the meeting on 16 April. And then late at night the date of the meeting was changed again to 6 April.[8][9]
- 6 April – Regarding the convening of the meeting on 6 April, the Secretary Assembly has refused to comply with the orders of the Deputy Speaker. The Secretary Assembly said that the notification of the meeting is dated 16 April and it will be considered. He further said that the meeting was never convened on plain paper, a gazette notification has to be issued to convene the meeting.[9]
In the symbolic session of the Punjab Assembly, 199 members passed a resolution to elect Hamza Shahbaz as the Chief Minister. After the doors of the Punjab Assembly were closed, the opposition convened a symbolic meeting at a local hotel. Jahangir Tareen and Abdul Aleem Khan Group members attended. In the symbolic meeting, a resolution was tabled to elect Hamza Shahbaz as the Chief Minister and the members stood up and approved the resolution.[10][11]
No-confidence motion against Speaker and Deputy speaker
- 6 April – PTI leaders have filed a motion of no confidence against their own deputy speaker Muhammad Mazari. The motion of no-confidence against the Deputy Speaker was first approved by the Prime Minister, and the no-confidence motion was signed by Mian Mahmood Al-Rasheed and other members of the Assembly.[12][13]
The PML-N leader reached the Punjab Assembly Secretariat to file a no-confidence motion against the Speaker Punjab Assembly once again. Leaders included Khawaja Salman Rafique, Khalil Tahir Sindhu, Samiullah Khan and others. A day before they were prevented from doing so after which they returned.[14]
Riots and brawl
On 16 April 2022, from the very beginning of the meeting, a riot broke out in the House and the Deputy Speaker was tortured. For the first time, the police also came in the House. Government members threw ewers, scratched and slapped Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari. Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi kept applauding his members but during the same commotion he was also injured in the violence.[15][16]
Oath crisis
An extraordinary session of the Punjab Assembly was held on 16 April 2022, in which the opposition candidate Hamza Shahbaz was elected the new Chief Minister but he has not been able to take the oath of office yet which has created a situation of uncertainty. Governor Punjab Omar Sarfaraz Cheema refuses to take oath from newly elected Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz.[17]
