The Party of Freedom and Justice (Serbian: Странка слободе и правде, romanized: Stranka slobode i pravde, SSP) is a social-democratic political party in Serbia. It is led by Dragan Đilas.

It was founded in April 2019 after a merger of the Green Ecological Party and Serbian Left. Since its inception, it has placed itself as a major opposition political party in Serbia after leading two opposition alliances, the Alliance for Serbia and United Opposition of Serbia.

History

Background and foundation

The predecessors to the SSP were the Green Ecological Party and Serbian Left.[1] The main predecessor was the Green Ecological Party, which was founded in 2008 and had been led since 2015 by Dejan Bulatović.[2][3] It was one of the founding parties of the "Civic Bloc 381" which was formed in 2018 and headed by the Movement of Free Citizens,[4] although it left the alliance in November 2018.[5] A month later, it joined the Alliance for Serbia, which was formed around Đilas in September 2018.[6] The other predecessor, Serbian Left was formed by Borko Stefanović in 2015 after leaving the Democratic Party.[7][8]

In March 2019, Đilas announced that he made an agreement to reconstruct Bulatović's party under a new name, with Đilas as the president, in order to forgo the registration process.[9] Đilas previously stated in December 2018 that he had no plans of "buying" Bulatović's party due to media speculation that arose after it joined Alliance for Serbia.[10] The founding convention of SSP was held on 19 April 2019,[11] in which Đilas was chosen as the president and Marinika Tepić, Stefanović and Bulatović as vice presidents.[11][12]

Ideology

The Party of Freedom and Justice is orientated towards social democracy,[13][14] and green politics.[15] It sits on the centre-left on the political spectrum,[16][17] and it advocates and supports the accession of Serbia to the European Union.[18][19]

During its founding convention, Đilas announced that the party will be fiscally focused towards economic prosperity and education,[11] and that they won't be ignoring the political status of Kosovo.[11]
