During festive seasons, he used to play the role of a girl in his village's natak, which was appreciated by the villagers and ultimately prompted him to make a career out of acting.[8] He moved to Patna after high school where he studied in Institute of Hotel Management, Hajipur. He did theatre and was active in college politics.[9] Out of fear of failure in acting he also worked briefly at Maurya hotel in Patna, where he encountered his idol Manoj Bajpai. Tripathi later narrated that once, while he was working as a chef at Maurya Hotel, he decided to keep Bajpai's slipper, which the latter forgot in his room, as a souvenir. After his stay of about seven years in Patna, he moved to Delhi to enroll in the National School of Drama, from where he graduated in 2004.[10][11]
Career
After graduating from the National School of Drama, Tripathi moved to Mumbai in 2004, Firstly he played role of politician in Tata Tea ad and subsequently performed an uncredited role in the film Run.[12][3] In 2012, he made his breakthrough, when he was widely acclaimed for his role in Gangs of Wasseypur. His audition for film went on for approximately eight hours.[13][14] In 2008, he acted in the Bahubali TV series, and later in Powder on Sony TV. In his early career, he played mostly negative roles and became synonymous with gangster characters.[15][16] Later, he played a variety of roles and won critical appraisal for the same.[17] His first film as a lead actor was the 2017 film Gurgaon.[18] His 2017 film Newton was India's official entry for the Academy Award in best foreign film category.[19]
Pankaj Tripathi made his debut in Tamil cinema with the film Kaala, which was released on 7 June 2018.[20] He also appeared in the 2018 web series Mirzapur[21] and Mirzapur season 2 available on Amazon Prime and in the 2019 web series Sacred Games available on Netflix.
Personal life
Pankaj met Mridula during a wedding ceremony in 1993, at that time Mridula was studying in class IX and Pankaj was in class XI. Pankaj fell in love with Mridula at first sight. Pankaj and Mridula had to persuade their parents to the marriage because Pankaj's sister was married to Mridula's brother, and marriage in the same family was against their caste. After much effort, the couple got married on 15 January 2004. They moved to Mumbai after their marriage and in 2006, they had a baby girl named Aashi Tripathi.[8][22]
