National Library of Uganda

The National Library of Uganda was established by an Act of Parliament in 2003, replacing the Public Libraries Board itself established in 1964. The Act provides for the depositing and preservation of publications, the setting up of an information referral service and library co-ordination and to provide for other related matters. The Act was passed in Parliament in September 2002 after the Committee on Social Services had incorporated the concerns of other stakeholders, the President accented to it in December 2002 and it was published in the Uganda gazette as Act No.2 of 2003[1]

Partnerships

In January 2010, The National Library of Uganda partnered with the Library of Congress to digitize local Ugandan materials for the World Digital Library, an internet-based resource to which libraries and archives from throughout the world contribute. In this partnership, National Library of Uganda received funding, training, and equipment. The digitized material is not only preserved but is now available to a broader spectrum of Library Users.[2]

In March 2019, National Library of Uganda was connected to Airtel Uganda 4G Wi-Fi internet. It was part Airtel Uganda’s initiative to contribute towards ICT in education and promote reading culture in Uganda. [3]

National Library of Uganda receives significant donations of books from Book Aid International. Furthermore, Book Aid International launched a partnership project with National Library of Uganda and Worldreader to bring e-readers into children's corners. 10 libraries in Uganda now have e-readers, preloaded with titles to support education and reading.[4]

National Library of Uganda partnered with EIFL (Electronic Information For Libraries) to implement the ‘Digital Skills @ Your Public Library’ initiative. The project will target 13,500 individuals across 25 libraries in Uganda. The project will raise awareness about the facilities available at libraries and offer training and support to librarians so that they, in turn, can engage their communities in learning. [5]
