On 9 April, 2022, Mahoney was named on the bench for the match against Preston North End. However, due to an illness veteran goalkeeper Keiren Westwood felt before the game, leaving him unable to play, Mahoney started in the lineup. Mahoney conceded 2 goals from a Jimmy Dunne own goal and a Cameron Archer goal, but manager Mark Warburton praised him, saying "young Murphy stepped up."[5]
