All That Glitters Is a Mares Nest
All That Glitters Is a Mares Nest is a live album by the English rock band Cardiacs. It is their third live album, and was originally recorded in the afternoon in the Salisbury Arts Centre on 30 June 1990. In effect, it is the soundtrack album to the live concert film Maresnest. All That Glitters Is a Mares Nest is, technically, the last Cardiacs recording to feature saxophonist Sarah Smith, percussionist Tim Quy and keyboard player William D. Drake as band members. It is the only Cardiacs album to feature guitarist Christian Hayes throughout.

Napalm Death were recording their Live Corruption video at the same venue that evening, and seeing as both Cardiacs and Napalm Death shared the same manager, it was decided they could record two live videos in the same place for the price of one-and-a-half. The CD features two extra tracks ("Two Bites Of Cherry" and "All Spectacular") that didn't appear on the video.
All That Glitters Is a Mares Nest is the only Cardiacs album to feature the band as a septet. In fact, the lineup of Cardiacs which played this concert did not entirely reflect the live touring band of the time. Sarah Smith had left the band the previous year, but had maintained her connections with the band: she was persuaded to temporarily rejoin the band as a special guest for the show.
The Salisbury Arts Centre show was Tim Quy's last performance with Cardiacs. Although William D. Drake is clearly heard performing on the album and is fully visible on the Maresnest video recording, his name was entirely left out of the personnel credits.
Video
Maresnest (full title All That Glitters Is A Maresnest) is the second official video released by Cardiacs and it was recorded live at the Salisbury Arts Centre on 30 June 1990.
This video marked the last time Sarah Smith and Tim Quy played with the band. Sarah had ceased to be a full-time member of the band more than a year earlier, but had made other guest appearances before this one. There is a dedication at the end of the video which states that Tim Quy left "our world" the day the video was made. This is a joke by Cardiacs and was meant to indicate that Tim Quy had left the band. Many fans mistakenly thought he had died. There are several references to Tim Quy throughout the video, mostly in the backstage sequences where several members ask whether anybody has seen him. Future Cardiacs members Jon Poole and Bob Leith can be seen in audience shots.
Of interest, Cardiacs shared the same management as Napalm Death at the time, and both bands recorded live videos in the same venue that day (Napalm Death recorded Live Corruption). Some members of Napalm Death are huge fans of Cardiacs. Contrary to some reports, however, they were not on the same bill. The two video recordings were entirely separate events with Cardiacs recording in the afternoon and Napalm Death in the evening.
The video was directed by Steve Payne and produced by Steven Malitsky, for Fotodisk.
Maresnest was officially re-released on DVD format on 2 September 2013, with improved video and sound quality.
