History
Prior to MLB Sunday Leadoff branding
Major League Baseball first aired on Peacock during the 2021 MLB season, when Peacock streamed the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants' June 18–20 series exclusively for free. The local rights to both teams are owned by the NBC Sports Regional Networks, and the games featured a mixture of personnel from the teams' broadcasts on NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports Philadelphia: the commentary team featured the Giants' Jon Miller on play-by-play, with his partner Mike Krukow, and the Phillies' John Kruk and Jimmy Rollins, serving as analysts.[1][2] This telecast did not use the MLB Sunday Leadoff branding.
As MLB Sunday Leadoff
In March 2022, it was reported by The Wall Street Journal that NBC Sports was finalizing an agreement to establish a new package of Sunday afternoon games beginning in the 2022 MLB season (effectively succeeding TBS's previous Sunday afternoon package during the second half of the season, which was replaced by a new Tuesday night package for 2022).[3] NBC formally announced the deal on April 6, and announced the inaugural broadcast would be a game between the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on May 8.[4]
As previously mentioned, the May 8, 2022 broadcast would be simulcast on the NBC broadcast network. Therefore, this would mark the first time that a Major League Baseball game would be televised on NBC since Game 6 of the 2000 American League Championship Series on October 17, 2000.
NBC also announced that the deal would bring the All-Star Futures Game, on-demand classic MLB games, and other baseball programming to Peacock.[5]
On April 13, 2022, NBC announced they would brand these games as MLB Sunday Leadoff.[6]
On April 26, 2022, the New York Post reported that Jason Benetti would be the lead play-by-play man for MLB Sunday Leadoff. The post also reported that the color commentators would feature one person from each team playing in the game.[7] Separately, on the same day, NBC announced Ahmed Fareed as the studio host for the series.[8]
