M1 highway (Moldova)

The M1 highway (Romanian: Drumul național M1) is a road in Moldova connecting Chișinău to the border with Romania at Leușeni, from where it continues as the Romanian DN24B. It is 97 km (60 mi) long and forms part of European route E581 of the International E-road network.

Route description

It is known as the main road connection between Chișinău and the Romanian capital of Bucharest and further in the European Union. It starts at the intersection with the M21 highway and the R1 republican road, west of Chișinău.[1] It then heads north-west until reaching the intersection with the R6, which links Ialoveni to the M1 highway.[2]

The road then heads towards the Romanian border at Leușeni. Throughout its route, it meets with the republican roads R44, R25 and R33, which connect Hîncești, Nisporeni and Călărași, respectively, with the M1 highway.[3] On the Romanian side, immediately after the border crossing at Leușeni, the road connects also with DN28, towards the Romanian city of Iași.[4]
