Nishikata attempts and fails to prank his seatmate Takagi using an improvised jack-in-a-box. Later, Takagi borrows his eraser, reminding him of a childish tale that used to be popular, stating how if one writes their crush's name on their eraser and finish using it, their love will be mutual. While she is away, Nishikata takes her eraser to write a name on it. However, he sees a message that says, "Look at the hallway" where Takagi is there giggling. Secretly though, Nishikata's name is written on the other side.

Nishikata goes to school and sees Takagi on the window. When he cannot find her, Takagi pops out from the curtain besides him. Yet again, Nishikata fumbles in humiliation.

As Nishikata tries to make a funny face to Takagi, she gives him tips for a much improved and even funnier face. However, as he turns his head, he faces Mr. Tanabe and gets scolded.

Mina, Sanae, and Yukari are walking home when Mina suddenly stops and steps on what she believes is a one hundred yen coin. After some investigating, Yukari and Sanae tell Mina it is actually a token.

Nishikata and Takagi's class is having calligraphy lessons when Takagi proposes writing a word of what they want from each other. Nishikata's second attempt backfires when Takagi uncharacteristically shows kindness to him. As it turns out, she had rubbed ink on his face, as her second calligraphy depicts.

Mina and Yukari mope about the heat when they notice Sanae wearing a short-sleeved uniform. Later, Mina and Yukari switch to shorter sleeves, but Sanae is in a longer uniform.

During English class, Nishikata plans to distract Takagi long enough so she cannot answer the teacher when it is her turn to read aloud. To his disappointment, although she is caught by surprise, she easily finds the assigned line and answers it.

Nishikata is unable to participate in the pool with the class due to a hand injury. As he sits on the bench, Takagi tests him to solve why she is not swimming. In a panic, he goes with his initial guess that she is undergoing menstruation. In reality, she did not have any problem and feigned a condition to join him.

Mina tries to drink a can of coffee, but struggles with its strong taste. Sanae offers her juice, which Mina graciously accepts before Sanae clarifies such a drink is childish.

On the way to school, Takagi suggests a contest to see who can throw their respective cans in, with the loser forced to obey the victor. After she successfully makes her toss, she distracts Nishikata enough on his attempt to miss.

Mina drinks a bottle of soda, though its fizz is too discomforting for her. Yukari drinks it without problem until she feels the urge to burp. She then lets one out while Mina talks loudly, which Sanae notices.

Nishikata decides to form an exercise regimen based on Takagi's teasing. After she comments that he looks more muscular, a motivated Nishikata strives to continue his training.

Mina, Sanae, and Yukari see two cats outside and pretend that they are having a conversation as a couple.

Just as school is over with for the day, it starts raining. Takagi then suggests that she and Nishikata walk home together. As they do so under an umbrella, Takagi teases Nishikata about the situation, much to his chagrin.

Upon failing, he gets her a can of juice but does not have enough money for himself, prompting Takagi to buy one for him.

At Yukari's house, she is working on her summer homework while Mina and Sanae chide her for not enjoying the break.

Unable to practice tandem, Takagi challenges Nishikata to a test of courage. Inside a tunnel, Takagi begins to play pranks on Nishikata. At home, Nishikata continues his workouts.

While walking and eating popsicles, Mina and Sanae tell an annoyed Yukari that she will help them with their assignments due to her being the class president.

Nishikata finds Takagi and follows her around before she hides in a bush, where she pops out and scares him. When a cicada surprises her enough to stumble, Nishikata scrapes his knee trying to catch her. The two go to a faucet to clean his wound, while Takagi gives him her handkerchief to wrap it.

At the mall's bookstore, Nishikata purchases the latest volume of 100% Unrequited Love, but encounters Takagi outside, and she makes a bet saying she knows what he bought. To deceive her, Nishikata copies the characters' actions. Despite this, however, she still guesses correctly.

Having lost the bet, Nishikata has to help Takagi select a swimsuit, a task that proves too embarrassing for him. When he sees Mano and Nakai in the store, he hides in the dressing room until they leave upon greeting Takagi.

At the beach, Mina and Sanae prepare to swim when they notice Yukari pumping air into a life preserver as she cannot swim. Deciding to leave her, the two enjoy their day until they return to find an exhausted Yukari, who had to exhale into the inflatable as the pump broke.

Discussing their summer homework, Takagi agrees to let Nishikata copy her answers and proposes working together at his house. Inside, she says she likes his room, prompting him to ask if they should study. As he only has one desk, they study together on his bed, during which she shows the assignments in question are kana writing drills, much to his dismay.

Embracing the typhoon's severe winds, Nishikata role-plays as a wind-controlling character when Takagi overhears him. She copies his behavior, which he vehemently denies ever happened. Noticing she does not have her bike with her, Nishikata is quizzed on why, but cannot provide an answer in time.

The school participates in a marathon, with Nishikata and Takagi creating a competition over who would be faster. They eventually agree to see if he can keep within a certain distance of her, a deal that ultimately leads to Nishikata's defeat as the girls are only required to run half the distance.

On the walk home, Takagi pokes Nishikata's ribs, tickling him. Peeved, he considers responding in kind when she proclaims her ribs cannot be tickled. Nishikata plots various distraction strategies, all of which do not come to fruition, before Takagi allows him to poke her to prove her point.

Mina, Sanae, and Yukari visit the tunnel, where Mina and Sanae begin to run around and examine every surrounding. The three eventually exit the tunnel, with Mina proclaiming her satisfaction.

Nishikata gets a new cell phone and exchanges emails with his friends. Interested, Takagi asks to see it, which Nishikata prepares to exploit until she hands it back. Meanwhile, Mina and Yukari consider getting cell phones of their own and ask Sanae if she wants one, but she declines until she reveals she already has one.

During cleanup duty, Nishikata and Takagi talk about their cell phone activities when the former decides to send her a scary video. Takagi eventually watches it, but is unfazed as horror does not have the same impact in the morning. At home, Nishikata considers his next move until Takagi calls him, and the two converse for the evening.

Nishikata wants to take a photo of Takagi making a funny face as he is competing with his friends. She obliges, but does so when he is not ready. When he tries to convince her again, she scares him and captures his reaction. Worried about it being used as blackmail, he unsuccessfully asks her to delete it. Annoyed by her laughter, Nishikata tries to retaliate by taking her photo, though she quickly reacts and shifts to a normal expression.

As they walk to school together, Takagi notices Nishikata has grown, leading to a height comparing contest. When Nishikata becomes skeptical of Takagi's measurement, she faces him directly before she admits she had been standing on her toes while their backs were turned.

With winter arriving, Mina and Sanae decide to place their cold hands on Yukari's skin to elicit a reaction. When Yukari tries to do the same, she gets no response as her hands are too warm. Takagi does the same to Nishikata, which the trio notices as Yukari starts to assume they are indeed dating.

Besides Yukari, Nishikata's friends infer he is dating Takagi when he declines their invitation to play video games. After asking Takagi directly, Mina discloses they are not going out, while Nishikata also denies it. As Takagi is usually the one who asks Nishikata to walk her home, she asks for his thoughts on the matter, but he is too nervous to give an answer.

While buying juice, Nishikata asks Takagi a two-choice question. When it is her turn, Takagi eventually asks Nishikata loaded questions with romantic intentions, which he hesitantly answers.

While seemingly having a conversation about boys, Yukari eventually realizes Mina and Sanae are actually talking about their favorite dog characteristics.

In art class, Takagi and Nishikata are tasked with painting portraits of each other. Nishikata tries to draw an demonized image of Takagi, but he feels guilty about it. She then shows him hers, which he incredulously questions.

Takagi has her fortune told via tarot when Nishikata walks by for room cleanup. She then challenges him to rock-paper-scissors, which he unexpectedly wins. Takagi later tells him the fortunes regarding their crushes and the game.

After getting a positive outlook for his horoscope and blood type, a confident Nishikata arrives in class. Later that day, when Takagi asks him why did he turn down an invitation from his friends, Nishikata says he wanted to walk home with her. The class has been secretly writing love letters to one another. After a while, Takagi affirms to Nishikata she wrote him a letter. When he reads it, it is just an invitation to walk home with her.

In a flashback to their inaugural day of middle school, Takagi was worried after losing an unknown item when Nishikata arrived to class late. After getting their seat assignments, an annoyed Nishikata complained to his seatmate about how a "Takagi" was responsible for him being late. After the entrance ceremony, she revealed she was the one he had helped, while the lost object was her handkerchief.

After hurting his knee, Nishikata remembers he still has Takagi's handkerchief. The next day, the class changes seats. The new arrangement separates Takagi, Nishikata, Mano, and Nakai. After his effort to switch with his friend Kimura fails, Nishikata places his head on his desk in resignation. Upon waking up, he discovers Takagi had switched with Mano and Nakai with Kimura. Nishikata eventually returns the handkerchief; that night, Takagi unfurls it to find a thank you note from Nishikata, which causes her to happily squirm in her bed.

Nishikata is in class when he realizes that he does not have his English textbook. After a while, he reluctantly moves his desk next to Takagi's. Later, they exchange letters that contain hidden messages to each other.

When Takagi walks in the classroom and sees Nishikata with a hypno coin, she asks him to try it on her. After being surprised that it seemingly worked, he eventually tells her to pick her nose. Just as she is about to do it, Nishikata has second thoughts and tries to stop her. Once this happens, Takagi reveals that she only pretended to be hypnotized.

A tired Mina is in the hallway talking to Yukari and Sanae where she tells them that she watched a hypnotism show. As a result, she got hypnotized. Afterwards, they find out that Mina is still hypnotized.

As they are walking home together, Nishikata proposes he and Takagi have a stone skipping contest. On April Fools' Day, Nishikata and Takagi head to the candy store. Inside, Takagi urges Nishikata to try a grass-based candy, which he actually enjoys. Later, she tells him the upcoming school year may result in seats being shuffled. This shocks him until she reveals it only applies to the third-year students.

With the new school year arriving, Mina tries to diet in order to emulate the slim bodies of models and television stars. However, when Takagi and Nishikata arrive with candy, she quickly abandons her regimen.

A week after starting their first year, Sanae began addressing Kimura without an honorific, an act he found intimidating. Nishikata tried to take advantage of this by dropping "-san" from Takagi's name, but panicked and re-added it. In response, Takagi, who had been calling him Nishikata-kun, decided to remove the suffix.

Now a second-year, Nishikata once again attempts to drop Takagi's honorific, but instinctively says it anyway. He tries to copy the upperclassman role in 100% Unrequited Love, which prompts Takagi to address him as Nishikata-senpai. Embarrassed, a struggling Nishikata gives up.

As a result of his push-up routine, Nishikata easily defeats his friends in arm wrestling. Takagi challenges him to a match, during which she lowers his guard by feigning weakness and joking about them holding hands.

Staring out her classroom window, Mina philosophizes about how short youth can be. When she starts comparing it to expiration dates on food, Yukari and Sanae point out her thinking does not make her as grown up as she believes, but retract their statements when she starts to cry.

Due to his loss in arm wrestling, Nishikata buys juice for Takagi. Remembering a conversation he had with his friends about maturity, he buys coffee for himself, but struggles with its strong flavor. Takagi tells him drinking coffee does not change her perception of him.

Nishikata encounters Takagi walking to school without her bike, to which she asks him to figure out why. As they are hanging out, Nishikata eventually reveals his answer, which proves to be incorrect. While Takagi reveals one of the answers out loud, she whispers to herself that she had already told him the other answer earlier that she wanted to hold hands.

After watching Dandy of the Old West, Nishikata tries to copy the titular character's mannerisms while he and Takagi engage in asking a series of questions. However, Takagi's prompts cause him to panic, which enables her to tickle him.

When Mina misinterprets Yukari and Sanae's conversation about eyebrows, she insults Yukari's bangs. Although Sanae clarifies what they were talking about, Yukari is too hurt by Mina's remark.

Nishikata and Yukari are members of the field trip planning committee, which forces them to stay after school. Unaware of his thoughts, Yukari observes Nishikata's behavior and assumes he is lamenting not going home with Takagi.

On his birthday, Nishikata visits a bakery to pick up his cake when he encounters Takagi. Not wanting her to know his intentions, he challenges her to guess his destination and vice versa, only to learn she is also going to the bakery. Inside, Takagi picks up her items first before giving them to Nishikata as a prize for winning the challenge. In addition to sweets, he receives a 100% Unrequited Love keychain.

Various students begin to sneeze, prompting them to theorize as to why they are being discussed.

As they are getting ready to take the sports test, Nishikata proposes a contest to Takagi where the winner is the one who receives the higher score. After a few tests are completed, the final one is the grip strength. During his second attempt, Nishikata becomes distracted when he thinks about holding Takagi's hand. When he concedes defeat, Takagi reveals that her score was lower than his.

After school, Nishikata challenges Takagi to a game of dodgeball, which she easily wins. During the next game, she asks him a loaded question with romantic intentions. Although Nishikata does not catch it, Takagi is glad he went after it.

After buying some snacks at the candy store, a cat takes Yukari's candy bar. Giving chase, Sanae eventually discovers why the cat took it. As they are walking, Yukari, Mina, and Sanae realize that they left their bags and snacks at the candy store.

At the candy store, Nishikata and Takagi decide to buy some ramen. While they are eating, Takagi teases Nishikata about how it looks like they are on a date just before Takao and Kimura walk in.

On the class camping trip, Nishikata, Takagi, Mano, and Nakai split up as Mano wants to be alone with Nakai. While Nishikata and Takagi are in a cabin, Nishikata challenges Takagi to guess a candy he feeds her. At dinnertime, the class is making curry when Yukari cuts her hand. As such, Sanae and Mina offer to help her. A folk dance is held later that night, during which the students discuss a rumor that two people with romantic feelings for each other will fall in love if they were to hold hands once the song ends. Unfortunately for Nishikata, the music concludes just before he and Takagi are about to join hands. Although much of the class goes to sleep afterward, Mina, Sanae, and Yukari attempt to use flashlights to communicate with each other via Morse code until Sanae and Mina are caught by Mr. Tanabe. Nishikata leaves his tent and spots Takagi stargazing; after she tells him she had made a wish on the stars, the two hide under a rock until Mr. Tanabe leaves. Once he is gone, Takagi reveals she had wished to watch the stars with Nishikata.

Nishikata is on cleaning duty for the day following PE class. Takagi joins him and they head to the storage closet. Inside, Takagi teases a flustered Nishikata about the situation. Meanwhile, Mina, Yukari, and Sanae are in the hallway talking about the supernatural.

Leaving the storage closet, Takagi notices that Nishikata has blood on his pants. When they head to the nurse's office, Takagi grabs the antiseptic and proposes a bet where Nishikata will lose if he says "ouch". Letting his guard down, he loses when he indirectly says it.

In the hallway, Kimura shows his friends a winning lottery ticket. Elsewhere, Mina, Yukari, and Sanae are walking home when Sanae finds a lottery ticket on the ground. After a while, they ultimately decide to take it to the station. Later, Nishikata and Takagi are heading home when they talk about what they would do if they won the lottery. After Nishikata goes first, Takagi reveals that she would go on vacation with the person she loves before she asks him if there is any place that he would like to go.

In the classroom, Nishikata notices something is off with Takagi. After school, Nishikata finds Takagi at the shrine, who reveals she had a fight with her mother. Feeling better, she asks him to stay with her. She then asks if she can tease him again, much to his chagrin.

At his house, Nishikata sends Takagi a text message. After a while, he becomes flustered when he nearly sent a couple of replies that could have been interpreted as being romantic. Nishikata then attempts to trick her, but he admits she got him with her reply. After they finish messaging each other, Takagi reveals she is blushing.

After Takagi successfully applies Nishikata some eye drops, the two swap turns. In a panic, Nishikata attempts to force her eyes open with his hands as Yukari enters the classroom.

Having misconstrued Takagi and Nishikata's eye drop challenge as kissing, Yukari asks Hojo to peek through the classroom door to investigate. Yukari later tells Mina and Sanae what she believes is a scoop, only to be frustrated when they provide childish examples.

Nishikata challenges Takagi to a game of hide-and-seek, which Takagi wins when she finds him behind a set of barrels. Hamaguchi and Hojo then sit near their location. Nishikata accidentally exposes himself when Takagi comes closer to him. When he tries to explain they were playing hide-and-seek, Takagi describes their experience in a sensual light, embarrassing him and Hamaguchi.

Walking home, Takagi finds a map that presumably leads to treasure. While following it, she and Nishikata reach a tree with the names of a couple carved into the trunk. The two then sit underneath it and listen to some music.

Yukari sees that Mina and Sanae are sending text messages to each other. When she sees a message about the summer festival, Yukari remembers when she went with her sister a year prior and she obliges her sister's wish to shoot fireworks.

At the library, Nishikata and Takagi exchange souvenirs. When she later tells him how happy she is, he admits that he tried to prank her. At the shrine, Takagi heavily implies that she would like Nishikata to invite her to the summer festival.

Riding his bike, Nishikata runs into Takagi and he offers to help her as he is on his way to meet his friends. As they are talking, Nishikata attempts to invite Takagi to the summer festival, but he is too nervous. When they arrive at her house, he rides away. Just as Takagi is about to head inside, Nishikata rides back and invites her to the festival, much to her elation.

Meanwhile, Yukari, Sanae, and Mina prepare to go to the festival dressed in traditional yukatas. When they arrive, Yukari describes it as a perfect location for a couple to confess their love. Elsewhere, Nishikata sees various couples at the festival and feels uneasy about behaving the same way with Takagi. As the festival starts getting more crowded, Nishikata tries to hide from his friends, which causes him and Takagi to be separated from each other. Once the fireworks start, Kimura spots Takagi and realizes that she is looking for Nishikata. He then notifies Nishikata where she is located. As the fireworks end, Takagi spots Nishikata running to meet her and he grabs her hand. Later in the evening at the beach, they light up a pair of sparklers that Nishikata brought in hopes of winning at least once. Seeing it as a romantic gesture, Takagi tells him that he has not been losing at all. As Nishikata's sparkler extinguishes first, she declares it her win.

He invites her to the rooftop, but becomes flustered when he realizes he did not tell her they were going to rehearse their lines. Takagi teases Nishikata about the situation before their rehearsal commences. On the day of the culture festival, they visit the haunted house where Nishikata challenges Takagi to go in and out as fast as possible. Elsewhere, Yukari and Kimura participate in an eating contest, while Hojo discovers Hamaguchi's class is running a maid café. During the play, Nishikata performs his role as a dumpling. However, near the end of it, Kimura begins feeling sick, and he has Nishikata take over as the prince. When Takagi trips during the final scene, Nishikata races out to catch her. Once he realizes his mask fell off, Nishikata improvises his lines to look like a love confession to Takagi, much to her delight, and receives a standing ovation from the audience. Later that night, they attend a karaoke bar with their class, where Takagi lauds Nishikata's performance, and hints heavily that she loves him.

Nishikata meets up with Takagi to walk a dog. She then allows him to walk the dog by himself before they return it to its owner. As they head home, Takagi reveals she took a picture of Nishikata with the dog.

Nishikata and Takagi are walking home together when Nishikata realizes he left his homework at school. When they return there, Nishikata ditches Takagi so his friends will not see them. Along the way, he runs into Mano and Nakai before he arrives in the classroom, where Takagi is waiting for him.

Yukari, Mina, and Sanae are in the classroom talking about what they asked Santa Claus for Christmas. When Sanae reveals her family does not do Christmas presents at her house, Mina freaks out. Sanae attempts to tell Mina that Santa is not real, but Yukari stops her.

During library duty, Nishikata is astounded when he learns Takagi knows how to knit. When Takagi claims she is knitting an item for a 15-year-old boy, Nishikata becomes agitated. She then reveals the item is for an elderly woman's dog.

After school, Nishikata takes Takagi to some outdoor steps. When they finally reach the top, he is shocked when she mentions a legend that states boys and girls who climb the steps together will become a couple.

While Hamaguchi and Hojo are climbing the steps, Hojo wonders if Hamaguchi is going to mention the legend. However, when he claims the view has really fresh air, she tries to bring it up herself, much to their embarrassment.

Mano is excited to climb the steps with Nakai. However, she becomes concerned about how casual he is acting. When she wants to write their names in the notebook, he reveals he already did so during his last visit.

Yukari thinks Mina and Sanae took her to the steps so they can have a meaningful conversation about romance. However, she is disappointed when she realizes they do not know about the legend.

Nishikata and Takagi head to the bookstore where they exchange a couple of DVDs they rented. After they part ways, Nishikata realizes later on that Takagi knew he wanted to see the upcoming 100% Unrequited Love movie.

Nishikata has a dream where Takagi visits his room as Santa Claus. Later on, he meets up with her at the ferry so they can head to the mall to watch the 100% Unrequited Love movie. When they arrive there, they go to the arcade first, where Nishikata challenges Takagi to a contest involving the claw machine. They then arrive at the cinema, agreeing to pose as a couple to receive a promotional gift. After they finish watching the movie, Takagi asks Nishikata what type of girl he likes before she starts acting strange and clumsy. When they arrive at a plaza, Takagi reveals she was imitating Kyunko, the female lead of 100% Unrequited Love, as she wanted him to believe she was cute. As the lights of the Christmas tree come on, Nishikata hands her a present; a pair of mittens to keep her hands warm. Delighted by her present, Takagi gives him a present of his own, which turns out to be a scarf she knitted. When they return home, Nishikata and Takagi exchange Christmas cards.

On New Year's Day, Nishikata is at the shrine when he runs into Takagi. After they make their wish, they have a contest to see who will have the luckier fortune, which Takagi wins. When Nishikata tells Takagi they will do this again next year, she reveals her wish came true.

When Nishikata meets up with Takagi, she proposes a contest to see who can make a better snowman in thirty minutes. Takagi makes a small snowman, while Nishikata attempts to make a large one. However, he ends up running out of time. Despite this, she helps him finish his.

Takao catches up with Kimura at the school entrance, while Yukari, Mina, and Sanae discuss what they did during the holiday in the classroom.

Once Nishikata tells Hojo what Hamaguchi would like for his birthday, she asks that he keep their conversation a secret. After school, when Nishikata refuses to divulge what he and Hojo talked about, Takagi claims she is going to give a present to a 15-year-old boy. When he wonders who, she reveals she was referring to his birthday next year. They then apologize to each other.

On Valentine's Day, Nishikata arrives at school where he discovers three underclassmen have placed chocolate in his shoe locker. When he attempts to reveal this to Takagi in the classroom, he notices she is acting uncharacteristic. Elsewhere, Mina, Yukari, and Sanae exchange chocolate, Mano gives her chocolate to Nakai, and Hojo gives Hamaguchi a chocolate bar, much to his disappointment. Later, Nishikata is concerned when Takagi continues to act uncharacteristically. In the hallway, he is approached by the three underclassmen and when he returns their chocolate, they reveal they actually meant to give to it a classmate of his named Shibasaki. After school, as Hojo and Hamaguchi walk home together, Hojo reveals the reason why she gave him a chocolate bar was due to her burning the homemade chocolate she made for him. Meanwhile, Nishikata locates Takagi at the shrine and she admits that she knew about the situation and she felt jealous. She then gives him her chocolate. The next day, Hamaguchi tells Nishikata they are going to confess their feelings to Hojo and Takagi, respectively, on White Day.

Nishikata is distracted thinking about what Hamaguchi said while he and Takagi are walking home together. The next day, as Nishikata prepares an elaborate White Day contest, Takagi tells him that she will be going to a relative's wedding ceremony on March 13. On White Day, after he sets the contest in motion, Nishikata receives a text message from Takagi saying she might not be back until the following day. Meanwhile in the classroom, Mina finds one of the boxes for the contest after Takao and Kimura inadvertently displace it. As such, she, Yukari, and Sanae end up doing the contest instead. During library duty, Kimura gives Nishikata a book, which is the same one Takagi previously read. After school, Hamaguchi meets up with Hojo where he chickens out of confessing his feelings to her, much to her disappointment. Later that day, when Nishikata realizes all the times Takagi was being honest with him while reading the book, he runs out of his house to find her. When he finally does following a long chase, he tells her he wanted to see her, much to her delight.
