Spy × Family is an anime television series based on the manga series of the same title by Tatsuya Endo. Produced by Wit Studio and CloverWorks, the series is directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, with character designs by Kazuaki Shimada while Kazuaki Shimada and Kyoji Asano are chief animation directors. The music is produced by [K]NoW_NAME.[1] It was first announced in October 2021.[1][2]

The series follows master spy Twilight, who must disguise himself as psychiatrist Loid Forger and build a mock family in order to investigate political leader Donovan Desmond. Unbeknownst to him his "wife", Yor, is actually an assassin known as the "Thorn Princess", while his "daughter", Anya, has telepathic abilities.[3]

The series will consist of 25 episodes. The first part consisting of 12 episodes premiered in Japan on April 9, 2022, on TV Tokyo and other networks.[4] The second part consisting of 13 episodes will air later in 2022.[5] The opening theme song is "Mixed Nuts" (ミックスナッツ, Mikkusu Natsu) by Official Hige Dandism, while the ending theme song is "Kigeki" (喜劇, "Comedy") by Gen Hoshino.[6]

The series is licensed for streaming by Crunchyroll outside of Asia,[7] while it is distributed by Muse Communication in South and Southeast Asia.[8]

1"Operation Strix"

In order to ease tensions between Westalis and its neighboring country Ostania, Westalis Intelligence (WISE) assigns Twilight, their greatest spy, to form a family in Ostania in order to get close to Donovan Desmond, leader of Ostania's National Unity Party. To do this, he will need to enroll his "child" into Eden Academy, where he can safely and legitimately approach Donovan. Twilight, under the identity of Loid Forger, adopts a young girl named Anya, who secretly has telepathic abilities and immediately uses her power to discover Loid's true occupation. When Anya accidentally sends a transmission to Edgar, a minister in Ostania who has a grudge against Twilight, she is kidnapped by his goons. Loid rescues Anya by disguising himself as one of Edgar's men and blackmails Edgar using his daughter Karen in order to stay out of his business. Loid attempts to find a better home for Anya, as he feels like she should not involve in his dangerous mission. Anya convinces him to keep her and they find a new home without revealing either her power or her knowledge of Loid's identity. Later, Anya passes the admission exam to Eden Academy. Sometime later, Loid and Anya are informed that stage two for acceptance into Eden Academy is a formal interview with the presence of both parents.
2"Secure a Wife"

Yor Briar, a 27-year-old clerk at Berlint City Hall, is ostracized for being single by her colleagues. She is also informed that her relationship status may lead her to be suspected for espionage activities. In order to make a living for herself and her younger brother Yuri, she works as an assassin known as the "Thorn Princess" for an Ostania's organization. She and Loid meet by happenstance and Anya, reading Yor's mind and realizing she is secretly an assassin, pressures the two of them to get together, with Loid acting as her partner to appease Yuri and her colleagues at a party and her acting as Anya's mother to attend the Eden Academy's interview. Loid is double booked for the party thanks to his side mission and arrives late. Because of his injuries, Loid accidentally states that he is Yor's husband, and they leave after everyone has seen them together. As they are caught up by the pursuers from his previous mission, Yor, upon realizing that Loid does not find her eccentric behavior off-putting and seeing the benefit in having a partner, asks if their fake marriage can be more permanent than just for the upcoming interview. Loid agrees and signs off on their wedding vows using a grenade pin as a ring while their pursuers are killed in the explosion.
3"Prepare for the Interview"

Now being officially married, Yor moves in with Loid and Anya and receives a warm welcome. Loid tests Anya and Yor with a mock interview, which they both fail to satisfactorily answer the questions. Loid decides to organize a family outing with Yor and Anya in order to give them a better idea of what upper class family life is like. They attend several high class events such as listening to an opera, touring an art museum, and attending a political rally. However, it is shown that due to Anya's telepathy, she suffers severe pain when being among large groups of people. Loid begins losing faith in the success of his mission when Yor notices his stress and takes him to a park to relax. There, they witness a thief robbing an old woman, and with the support from his family, Loid successfully captures him. After getting the purse and the medical help, the old woman thanks them and observes that Loid, Yor, and Anya make a wonderful family. That night, Loid conducts another mock interview with slightly more success, and reassures himself that if they could make the old woman into thinking they are a family, then the mission still has a chance.
4"The Prestigious School's Interview"

On the day of the interview, the Forger family arrives at Eden Academy. However, Loid immediately notices that the school faculty, led by Housemaster Henry Henderson, is secretly observing and screening the attending families. Henderson focuses on "elegance" thus he readily disqualify and refuse entrance any family who does not fit his standard. Knowing this, Loid is able to lead Yor and Anya into behaving exactly the way Henderson wants. Suddenly, the school's farm animals break loose and begin stampeding, only being stopped when Yor incapacitates the lead cow and Anya uses her telepathy to calm it, finally earning Henderson's complete respect. They attend the actual interview with 3 of the school Housemasters, including Henderson, and give satisfactory answers. However, one of the interviewers, Housemaster Murdoch Swan, a bitter divorcee, deliberately tries to fail them by pressuring Anya to admit whether her original mother or Yor is better, triggering Anya's trauma. Loid breaks the interview table and decides to end the interview over this. After the Forgers leave, a furious Henderson punches and knocks out Swan for his cruelty out of respect for the Forgers. Back home, Loid is certain that they have failed the interview, but Yor and Anya reassure him by telling him to have faith in the other Housemasters vouching for them. With nothing to do but wait for the results, the Forgers resolve to hope for the best and leave the rest for fate.
5"Will They Pass or Fail"
