Line D5 (Moscow Central Diameters)

D5 (Russian: МЦД-5) or Yaroslavsko–Paveletsky Diameter (Russian: Ярославско-Павелецкий диаметр) is the fifth line of the Moscow Central Diameters which will open in 2024.[1][2]

Alternative routes

The suggested route would increase load on the already heavily used Mitkovo-Kotlyakovo section, while bypassing such important hubs as Komsomolskaya, Paveletskaya and Tulskaya. It has been suggested to connect Yaroslavskiy and Paveletskiy rail terminals with an underground tunnel and keep D5 entirely on the existing Yaroslavsky and Paveletsky suburban lines. The estimated cost is tens to hundreds billion roubles (up to several billion dollars).[3] It is possible that MCD-5 will be launched as two disjointed sections: Pushkino-Yaroslavskiy and Paveletskiy-Domodedovo and the tunnel would be constructed by 2035 or later.

Another suggestion is to connect Yaroslavsky and Paveletsky lines through railroads of western Moscow. This route is longer, but with less traffic. The final decision will be made after 2024.[4]

Regardless of the connection inside Moscow, the northern part is likely to also include Mytischi-Bolshevo section of Mytischi-Fryazevo branch line, connecting the city Korolyov to MCD-5. The upgrading of the railroad is underway.[5]
