Karol Miarka Liceum (in Polish: I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Miarki) is the oldest lyceum school in Żory.

History
  • The letter of the Opole Regency dated February 5, 1912 L II f XXIII/XII no. 147, approved the resolution of the Żory City Corporation to establish a German men's school, Städtische höhere Knabenschulle
  • 16 April 1912 - opening of the school
  • 1922 - the Żory secondary school came under the administration of the Polish education authorities and received the rank of progymnasium, i.e. six-year gymnasium.
  • 1922 - opening of the first co-educational gymnasium class
  • 1927 - transformation of the progymnasium into the Miejskie Gimnazjum Męskie im. Karola Miarki (Male Gymnasium with Karol Miarka as patron, who is the fighter for Polish identity in Silesia)
  • 1932 – Miejskie Gimnazjum Koedukacyjne im. Karola Miarki
  • 1945 – Państwowe Gimnazjum i Liceum Koedukacyjne im. Karola Miarki
  • 1948 – Szkoła Ogólnokształcąca Koedukacyjna stopnia Podstawowego I Licealnego im. Karola Miarki
  • 1952 – Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Miarki (Lyceum)
  • 1980 - Zespół Szkół Średnich (Secondary School Complex), which consisted of:

  • 1993 - Karola Miarki Lyceum
  • 1999 - Zespół Szkół Ogólnokształcących w Żory, consisting of:
    • I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im Karola Miarki
    • Liceum Ogólnokształcące dla Dorosłych (Lyceum for Adults)
    • Gymnasium no. 1
  • 2019 - Zespół Szkół Nr 1 w Żorach[1] (Complex of Schools No. 1 in Żory), consisting of:
    • I Liceum Ogólnokształcące z Oddziałami Dwujęzycznymi im. Karola Miarki
    • Technikum Nr 4 w Żorach (Technical School No. 4 in Żory)
  • 2020 - opening of the sports hall at the school[2]

Famous graduates

Among the alumni of the school are:

  • Krystian Lupa - theater director, set designer, graphic designer, author of theater scripts, adaptor, translator, teacher at the Krakow PWST, author of musical arrangements of his own productions;
  • Sonia Bohosiewicz - actress;
  • Zygmunt Łukaszczyk - politician, mayor of Żory in 1990–1998, since 2007 Voivode of Silesia;
  • Bartosz Gajda - cabaret artist, one of the creators of the Łowcy.B cabaret;
  • Henryk Fojcik - sculptor, author of a monumental altar in the Church in Rybnik;[3]
  • Waldemar Socha, who has been the mayor of Żory since 1998.[4]
