History

J&T Express was founded in 2015 by Jet Lee and Tony Chen (former CEO and current of Oppo, respectively); hence, the company is called J&T.[5]

Following its establishment in 2015, J&T has since expanded to Malaysia and Vietnam in 2017, the Philippines and Thailand in 2018, Singapore and Cambodia in 2019 and China in 2020.[1][6]

In November 2021, J&T announced that it had raised an additional USD 2.5 billion at a valuation of USD 20 billion, with investments from Boyu Capital, Hillhouse Capital Group, Sequoia Capital China, and Tencent Holdings. This follows reports that J&T is planning to go public in Hong Kong by the first quarter of 2022.[6][7]

In February 2022, the company continues to expand their market by entering Latin America through Mexico. It claims to have 12 sorting centers and 26 distribution centers in Mexico, and their network covers key regions in all 32 Mexican states.[8]

In general, J&T has seen a rapid increase in business since its founding and has become the fourth largest delivery company and the 8th unicorn in Indonesia.[9]

COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, it has seen a increase of 50% in deliveries during Ramadhan 2020 compared to last year, handling up to 3 million packages each day.[10]

J&T Express has given aid packages to cities severely affected by the outbreak, such as Surabaya[11] and Tangerang.[12] Medical aid packages were also given to hospitals.

Controversy

After a video went viral of workers throwing packages in 2020, J&T Express Philippines stated that it would sanction personnel involved in mishandling the packages [13][14] Similar video showing J&T Express Indonesian workers also circulated on the internet in 2019.[15]

Media Konsumen, an Indonesian consumer complaints platform, received multiple letters addressing complaints about faulty sorting and lack of transparency and accountability in J&T Express delivery tracking, resulting in their packages being lost or sent to wrong delivery address.[16] [17][18]

Another major incident happened on 4 February 2021. Malaysian social media was ablaze with videos of protests and rioting happening at J&T Express Malaysia warehouse. One clip showed workers throwing parcels while protesting in a warehouse, while another allegedly in a Perak warehouse showed mountains of undelivered parcels and unloaded delivery trucks. The issue arose from a change in the commission system, which allegedly drastically reduced the earnings of a delivery rider.[19]
