History
Impulse Youth Arts Organization was founded in Buena Park, CA in the fall of 1998 with the intent of growing and developing the local drum & bugle corps community, starting with Impulse Drum & Bugle Corps. The design goal of Impulse was to continue a style that is positive, playful, and a bit off-beat that follows in the tradition of the original Velvet Knights from Anaheim and the Bridgemen from Bayonne New Jersey, two great corps that are no longer on the field but brought smiles and laughter to fans across the country.
During its inaugural season, Impulse competed at 7 competitions within California placing 2nd at the DCI Pacific Championships in San Jose, CA. The following season of 2000, the corps expanded its tour to 13 competitions which traveled through the pacific northwest. Before reaching their final competition, Impulse earned two 1st place finishes and concluded in a 2nd place Div ll finish at Drums Along the Rockies in Denver Colorado. In year 3, which was 2001, the corps mounted its first national tour to attend the DCI Division II World Championship Prelims in Buffalo, New York, earning 9th place in Division II prelims outscoring over 24 division II and division III corps in total.
For the next few seasons, Impulse would tour the eastern half of the U.S., steadily climbing the competitive ranks. In 2002 Impulse placed 12th in Division II Championships at Madison, Wisconsin, in 2003 Orlando, Florida, Impulse placed 8th, in 2004 in Denver, Colorado, Impulse placed 6th with a score of 90.325 in Div ll/lll finals, and in 2005 in Brockton, Massachusetts once again earning a 6th place Div II Finals finish with a score of 90.375.
In 2006, the corps moved to Division III and won the DCI Division III World Championship Title in Madison Wisconsin, sweeping every caption. This feat of success allows Impulse the bragging rights of being Southern California's only active competing DCI World Champion.
2007 DCI would be hosted for the first time in History in Pasadena CA, Impulse's home state. Impulse would earn another Div ll/lll finals appearance placing 6th in Div lll finals. Since 2008, Impulse has exclusively toured the west coast to maintain its commitment of uninterrupted financial stability and providing a high level drum & bugle corps experience to all local performers. In 2016–2017 when the economic climate supported a national tour, Impulse briefly travelled to DCI Open Division Championships (formerly Div ll/lll) in Indianapolis, Indiana where DCI Championship has been held since 2008.
