Production

In 2011 directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru announced their intent to begin work on I Love New Year. The film originally had the working title of Happy New Year, but the title was changed because Shah Rukh Khan was working at the same time on a film of that title.[5] Actors Sunny Deol and Kangana Ranaut were cast in the lead roles;[6] Ranaut said that she trained for over a month in order to gain the correct expressions and body language of a musician.[7] Shooting commenced in summer 2011 at Filmalaya Studios in Mumbai,[8] and some scenes were filmed in Bangkok and the final scenes in New York City.[9]

Release

Originally planned for release in April 2013, the film was delayed several times. In June 2015, Ranaut issued a legal notice to the producers attempting to stop the film's release as she felt that they were "cashing in on her recent box office success".[10] Bhushan Kumar of T-Series responded that the rights had been sold to distributor Wave Cinema more than 18 months previously and as Ranaut was not "an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) member of the film", the producers did not need her permission.[11] The film was released on 10 July 2015.

Critical reception

The film received generally negative reviews. Nishi Tiwari of Rediff.com wrote in a 1 out of 5 stars review that it was "criminally unremarkable", criticising the story and saying that Deol's acting was not a good fit for a romantic comedy.[12] Troy Ribeiro of NDTV gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, calling the plot "silly and far-fetched" Deol miscast. Ribeiro pointed to Ranaut's performance as the highlight of the film, stating that she played her character with conviction.[13] Filmfare reviewer Rachit Gupta gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, criticising the film's "mish-mash of sentimentality, annoying characters and clichéd rom com developments". Gupta also felt that Deol and Ranaut as a couple were miscast, with Deol particularly not gelling as a romantic comedy lead. He also felt that the music was forgettable. However, Gupta praised Ranaut, calling her "quite literally too good to be in this film".[14]

Box office

The film collected 2.5 crore (US$330,000) nett in its entire theatrical run against the budget of 15 crore (US$2.0 million), and was declared a "flop" by Box Office India.[15]

Soundtrack

The song "Judaai" was recreated by Falak Shabir from a song previously composed by himself in 2013 of the same name.
