Gameplay

Format

Presented with a group of seven "mystery singers" identified only by their occupation, a guest artist and contestant must attempt to eliminate bad singers from the group without ever hearing them sing, assisted by clues and a celebrity panel over the course of four rounds. At the end of the game, the last remaining mystery singer is revealed as either good or bad by means of a duet between them and one of the guest artists.[3]

Rewards

If the singer is good, the contestant wins 10.000; if the singer is bad, the same amount is given to the bad singer instead.

Rounds

Each episode presents the guest artist and contestant seven people whose identities and singing voices are kept concealed until they are eliminated to perform on the "stage of truth" or remain in the end to perform the final duet.

  • Visual round
  • First impression (German: Erster Eindruck)

The guest artist and contestant are given some time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on their appearance.[lower-alpha 1][lower-alpha 2]

  • Lip sync round
  • Lip sync (German: Das Playback)

The mystery singers are divided into two groups of three and participate in lip sync performance to one song each.[lower-alpha 1][lower-alpha 2]

  • Evidence round
  • Fact or fake (German: Fakt oder Fake)

The guest artist and contestant are presented with a video clue package in which one of the mystery singers discusses their life and musical qualifications. Good singers are telling the truth, while bad singers are allowed to lie to deceive them.[lower-alpha 1][lower-alpha 2]

  • Rehearsal round
  • Secret studio (German: Soundcheck)

The guest artist and contestant are presented with a video recording from a studio session by one of the mystery singers, although the audio is pitch-shifted so they cannot clearly hear their vocals.[lower-alpha 2]

  • Interrogation round
  • Cross-examination (German: Kreuzverhör)

The guest artist and contestant can converse and ask questions of one of the remaining mystery singers. As before, good singers must answer truthfully, while bad singers might lie.[lower-alpha 1][lower-alpha 2]

Production

Background and development

Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland first announced the development of the series in June 2020.[4] Produced by Tresor Productions (a company of Keshet International),[5] the staff team is managed by executive producer Tobias Cullmann, producer Tina Allert, and director Bastien Angemeer.[6]

Filming

Filmings for the series took place at MMC Studios in Ossendorf, Cologne.[7][8] In October 2020, RTL announced the resuming of production as it was renewed for the second season in 2021 after shortlived first season broadcasts proved successful.[9][10] Since the second season, tapings have been implemented health and safety protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two episodes were completed before production was halted due to pandemic. One main reason for such interruption is lacking of safety countermeasures.[11] Tresor Productions spokesperson Jovan Evermann stated in response that the programme followed its guidelines according to the federal health department. None of the audience caught positive of virus at the end of production.[12]

Broadcast

I Can See Your Voice debuted as co-pilot episodes on 18 and 19 August 2020[13][14] as part of the network's Power Week special programming.[15][16] The second season premiered on 30 March 2021,[17][18] one week after the fourth season finale of ProSieben's rival show The Masked Singer, a German adaptation of the South Korean reality competition series.[19] The third season, now under Germanised title Zeig uns deine Stimme,[1][2] is set to premiere in 2022.[20]

Cast

The series employs a team of "celebrity panelists" who decipher mystery singers' evidences throughout the game. Alongside with full-timers and additional ones, guest panelists also appear since the second season. Throughout its broadcast, the programme has assigned 5 different panelists. The original members consist of Evelyn Burdecki, Jorge González, Thomas Hermanns, Tim Mälzer, and Judith Rakers.[21]
