The hotel was built on property leased for 20 years by the Orndorff Hotel Company and built in the latter half of 1926.[1] It opened with 164 guest rooms in December 1929. Built at a cost of $1 million, it was a seven-story, reinforced-concrete building located at the southwest corner of Colorado Boulevard and Mentor Avenue. It was designed by architect McNeal Swasey of Los Angeles and included Romanesque and modified Mediterranean design elements.[2] The exterior included a frieze along the top of the building featuring stone panels of angels and griffins. The building was also decorated with wrought iron and cast stone, including images of centaurs and other mythical beasts.[3] It was one of 18 major hotels in Pasadena in 1929.[4]

The property was named after Constance G. L. Perry who purchased the property in March 1926.[5] Perry sold the property in 1930 to hotelier J. Monroe Procter.[6][7]

The hotel, now operated by Dusit International, was renovated and expanded in the 2010s as the Hotel Constance DusitD2 Pasadena. The redecorated interior has been described as "'an amazing pop of techno Thai culture' in bold colors and fluid shapes."[8] It received a Pasadena preservation award in 2015.[9] It was listed on the National Registry of the Historic Hotels of America in 2016.[9]
