Chronology
Preceded byGossip Girl (2007–2012)

It was given a straight-to-series order in July 2019 by HBO Max. Filming takes place in New York City and was originally scheduled to begin in March 2020 before being delayed to November 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gossip Girl premiered on HBO Max on July 8 to mixed reviews, and broke the record for the most-watched HBO Max original series over its launch weekend.[1] The first season consisted of 12 episodes, split into two six-episode parts, with the second half debuting on November 25, 2021. In September 2021, the series was renewed for a second season.

Premise

Nearly a decade after the conclusion of the original series, a new cast of Manhattan private schoolers takes the lead under the watchful eye of Gossip Girl, while demonstrating how much social media – and the landscape of New York City itself – has changed in the intervening years. Gossip Girl is slated to feature more adult content than the original on The CW, owing to the relaxed standards of the HBO Max streaming service. The series is also slated to be more diverse, with non-white leads and LGBT characters.[2]

In regard to continuity, executive producer and showrunner Joshua Safran stated that it is officially in the same continuity of the original Gossip Girl series. However, rather than a direct continuation of the story, it is instead set in the same world where previous characters existed and can be freely referenced and potentially reappear, but stars a different set of characters from a different point of view.

Julien and Zoya are finally united, but keep their long history of social media messaging a secret from their fathers and Julien's friends. After Julien invites Zoya into her group of friends, "Gossip Girl" exposes their secret friendship and how Julien paid for Zoya to receive a scholarship before catching a picture of Zoya and Julien's boyfriend, Obie, and claiming the two to be secret lovers. Julien develops a plan to clear Zoya's name at her fashion show, but Monet and Luna secretly concoct a scheme that gets Zoya kicked out. After Julien does not help Zoya, the two denounce their friendship as Zoya announces her plan to overthrow Julien and becomes close with Obie after he dumps Julien. Max asks Aki to create a fake dating profile under the guise of Rafa to catch his father in the act, and Max and Julien secretly invite Rafa and Lola to the opening night of a Broadway play. Max exposes Roy's cheating to Gideon and, heartbroken and high, reveals Aki and Audrey's infidelities to the two before staying the night on Rafa's couch. Julien and Davis agree that he no longer needs to hide Lola. Meanwhile, the school hires an intelligence team to crack down on "Gossip Girl". Audrey and Aki begin to avoid each other. Max uses drugs and sex to deal with his parents' split, to which he actively pursues Rafa, who isn't appeased. Kate begins to complain about the workload of running "Gossip Girl" and Jordan and Wendy convince her to let them take some of the workload of "Gossip Girl". After Zoya accuses Julien of trying to get her and Nick evicted from their apartment, Julien decides to take her down, with Luna and Monet suggesting she throw a party. Zoya throws her own party in contest with Julien's and enlists the help of Milo Sparks, Georgina Sparks's son from the original Gossip Girl series. Nick and Davis decide to merge the parties together after their daughters attempt to overthrow each other's party. At the party, Julien publicly humiliates Zoya by showing a video, given to her by “Gossip Girl”, which involves Zoya destroying the school property of her old school in Buffalo. Julien realises how much damage this caused and deems herself a “bully”. Later on, Zoya explains to Julien the backstory of the video and the two reconcile. After avoiding each other for sometime, Audrey and Aki apologize to each other and makeup. In the end, Rafa gives in to Max's sexual pursuits and the two begin a student-teacher affair.

After a student brings a gun to school, ”Gossip Girl” lands in hot water leading Kate to hold off posting on “Gossip Girl” for awhile to Jordan and Wendy’s disapproval. Now that they’ve reconciled, Julien is destined to prove to her audience that her and Zoya are actually friends. She plans for her and Zoya to do a sister-duo costume at the annual Halloween party, “Hulaween”. Obie starts having doubts about his relationship with Zoya after she becomes distant. After meeting a guy named, Simon, on the bus, Zoya likes the thought of having a friend of her own, which further feeds into Obie’s doubts. Kiki informs Audrey that they would have to leave the city and move, much to Audrey’s dismay. Pippa and Bianca, rivals to Julien from another school, uses the gun incident to their advantage leaving Julien and Zoya to think of a costume that would outshine them at Hulaween. Jordan continues posting on “Gossip Girl” despite Kate’s orders to stop, leaving her with no choice but to deactivate the “Gossip Girl” Instagram account. Aki confronts Max about seeing Rafa, to which Max shrugs him off. Aki then turns to Rafa himself, who ends up threatening Aki if he were to come clean about Max and Rafa’s student-teacher affair. Julien and Zoya decide to dress up as Beyoncé and Solange Knowles respectively at Hulaween, only to find out someone had tipped off the attendees to dress up just like them. Aki tries his best efforts to expose Rafa. The tip off works in Pippa and Bianca's favor as they dress up as Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen from the original Gossip Girl series. Julien and Zoya then become Chuck Bass and Dan Humphrey, Blair and Serena's respective partners, to show up Pippa and Bianca. After being suspicious of Simon, Obie calls up Nelly Yuki, one of Blair's minions in the original series, to expose what Simon was doing, as Nelly is Simon's boss at a publishing house. Zoya finds out Simon was an insider, only befriending Zoya to gather information to back up his assumption that Zoya is "Gossip Girl". Later on, Max talks to a St. Jude's graduate, who informed him that Rafa sleeps with a new student every year. This leaves Max to confront Rafa about lying, which ends up in Max breaking off their affair. Luna discovers Monet was the tip off and confronts her with Julien. Audrey receives a call notifying her that her mother is in the hospital. After receiving some advice from Nick, Kate sets new boundaries on "Gossip Girl", ultimately turning off the comments to all posts for the foreseeable future.
