Gogoi

Gogoi or Ku-Kwoi (Assamese: গগৈ is a surname of Assamese origin). It means Dear younger brother in Ahom. When the Ahoms marched over to Assam and started to rule over the Assamese people, they developed a strong bond with the assamese people of Assam. This surname was granted to the assamese people who were very dear to the Ahom Royal Family. Generally the surname Gogoi was granted by the Ahom Dynasty to the assamese people and this position indicates Minister to the Ahom Kingdom. Swargadeo Rudra Singha divided the Assamese people of the seven ministerial houses into two main divisions. One of them is Gohain and the another is Gogoi.[1] In Ahom Kingdom a Borphukan named Gogoi served the Swargadeo Chandrakanta Singha as his kingdom's minister.
