Distribution
The Gnetum species is from the vine gymnosperm. There are about 40 different types of species within this family. They are generally categorised by characteristics like decussate leaves, vessels in stems which simiariliarize to some characteristics of angiosperms. Other than some of their structural characteristics they are overall dioecious in the process of spreading pollen. In specific, a Gnetum Macrostachyum Is a gymnosperm. The Gnetum Macrostachyum is an evergreen climbing plant that has twining stems, harvested from the wild for use as food and even a source of fibre. This plant's phylum is gnetophyta within the class gnetopsida. Habitat loss makes this species endangered now .This plant is widely distributed, and is known for a few protected areas in various countries and islands. It is mainly located in East Asia in places such as Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and even New Guinea to name a few. This climbing plant usually grows in environments like tropical rainforests where it's humid in forests, preferably by rivers on red or black soil, and usually on low elevations.
Uses
They produce red fruits, which the seeds are edible after being roasted. The bark is also known for making reliable ropes from their fibres. The Gnetum Macrostachyum is usually only harvested when it's abundant in the area, only because this plant poses no direct threat to any species and; the Gnetum Gnemon (G.Gnetum) is as related to this species- can be used for most/all of the same common reasons as the G. Macrostachyum.
Threats
This species is threatened due to various reasons such as newly built recreation areas; railroads, roads, fire, agriculture and wood harvesting would threaten this plant overall. Montane forests tend to be more intact as a habitat for this species, but in the lower parts like Sumatra and Java the species are very endangered due to the shifting of cultivation. To prevent further extermination of the species, many Macrostachyum plants have been planted in between protected areas of parks.
