History

Background

Geliyoo is a noun formed from the verb "to come". The name of the company was chosen in 2009 "to describe the arrival of a new technology".[4]

After founding

Geliyoo was founded in 2010 by ODTÜ graduate Hakan Atabaş and Texas Tech University student Fatih Arslan although the website wasn't ready to be used until 2017.[5] According to a single announcement in 2010, a team of 150 all-Turkish engineers developed the technology, calling it the "National Google".[6] Geliyoo was incorporated as a privately held company on April 5, 2012. In an interview, founders claimed to have spent €741,000 on developing Geliyoo without any income from ad revenue until 2012.[7][8]

In an opinion piece published by the New York Times, Geliyoo is described as a "national" search engine which was launched with the assistance of Turkey's government at a time when other services like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other social media services were being blocked on a routine basis. It goes on to say that Geliyoo will not return results that are deemed unsuitable for Turkish culture and family values. At the time of launch, the founders published letters praising the Turkish President.[9]

Services

Geliyoo Search was launched in January 2017.[10][11] The search engine is the company's most popular service.[12][13]

Geliyoo News

Geliyoo News is described as a free news aggregator provided and operated by Geliyoo that selects information from thousands of publications by an automatic aggregation algorithm. The service covers news articles appearing within the past 30 days on various news websites.[14][15]

Geliyoo Browser

Geliyoo Browser was launched as the "first Turkish web browser" in March 2019.[16] The service offers browsing together with built-in media downloading and sharing features. Geliyoo Browser is based on the Chromium technology platform and supports torrent files.[16]

Criticism

Geliyoo was criticized heavily by the Turkish media in 2017 when it was discovered that it worked by hiding the fact that the search results were being retrieved from Google Custom Search using a ready script, in stark contrast to its claims. In 2017, the Geliyoo website used Google Custom Search and Youtube Search for its search queries, causing some commentators to question the claim made by the company to have spent over 10 million Turkish Lira on development.[17][18][9][19] The media also revealed that the website theme and substructure design used on Geliyoo was sold on the internet for $59, and that it takes no more than an hour to install.[17][20] Multiple doppelgänger sites were made to mock Geliyoo, like "Gidiyoo" (to go [away]) and "Gelemiyoo" (not being able to come).[18][9] Geliyoo responded to the critics by saying that the script found on the internet was used to test their domain name and that the 10 million Lira was spent on something not published yet.[21]
