Empathism

The Empathic Movement (Italian: La Scuola Empatica / Empatismo) is a literary, artistic, philosophical and cultural movement[1] born in the South of Italy in 2020[2] within the 'New Cultural Triangle of Ancient Cilento':[3] Omignano - "The Aphorisms Village",[4] Salento - "The Poetry Village",[5] Vallo della Lucania - "Seat of Contemporary Arts Centre").[6][7][8][9]

Description

According to Menotti Lerro "as the new millennium enters its third decade, it is high time to find new directions for the arts. Interdisciplinarity and the idea of a “total artist” (a single person or a combination of many people from different subjects) are the basis of a new way to catch the “fragmentary truth” of our historical period. For this main reason, in 2020, a new movement arose".[10]

Starting with the values and ideas expressed in the "New Manifesto of Arts"[11] written by Menotti Lerro and Antonello Pelliccia,[2][12] this movement places at its centre of interest the empathic relationship and, therefore, personality in its ontic and ontological constitution. It follows that any creative or didactic experimentation cannot be separated from a process of identification with the other and its contemporaneity as an opportunity of study and sharing of knowledge and interior life stories. The horizon of meaning implies a civil promotion of the artistic society pouring from individual and community growth to ethical purposes mediated by an aesthetic dimension: namely, that of art.[13][14][15][16][17]

In 2021 Menotti Lerro devised an innovative “Cultural Pyramid of Cilento” (in Italian: Piramide Culturale del Cilento) including, for the first time, new and unknown villages (Salento, Omignano, Vallo della Lucania, and, in a second moment, also Trentinara) as main expression of culture.[18][19][9][20][21]

The Culture decentralization: from the North to the South

Many of the most distinguished Italian artists were called by Menotti Lerro to sign the “Empathic Manifesto”, to join in their peculiar expression of the “Arts” in a less individualistic way.[22] They then started to help create a new cultural pole in Southern Italy, giving life first to the “Contemporary Arts Centre” in the Cilento area, which has invented "The Poetry Village", "The Aphorisms Village", "The Village of love", and The Cilento Poetry Prize, giving light to new territory in terms of culture. The decentralization of culture gives voice to the silent masses of Cilento, in particular the peasant ones in the mountains.[23]

Some prominent members: Menotti Lerro founder of the movement, Antonello Pelliccia co-editor with Menotti Lerro of the "New Manifesto of Arts", Giacomo Rizzolatti, Dacia Maraini, Milo de Angelis, Giampiero Neri, Franco Loi, Roberto Carifi, Franco Mussida, Valerio Magrelli, Gino Finizio, Tiziano Rossi, Lidia Vianu, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Maria Teresa Chialant, Diego De Silva, Franco Arminio, Vivian Lamarque, Umberto Curi, Maria Rita Parsi, Omar Galliani, Raffaele Nigro, Tomaso Kemeny, Luigi Leuzzi, Angelo Ghilardi, Bernardo Lanzetti, Massimo Bacigalupo, Alessandro Quasimodo. In addition dozens of academic teachers signed the “Manifesto”.[24]
