Eagle catching Fish

Eagle catching Fish or Eagle catching Ichthys (German: Adler fängt Fisch or Adler fängt Ichthys) is a German anti-Christian and neo-pagan symbol. It shows an Eagle catching an Ichthys, a fish symbol associated with Christianity, and is supposed to represent the pagan strength and victory over Christianity.[1] The symbol was first created in 1989 and later registered as a trademark by Holocaust denialist Jürgen Rieger for the German neo-nazi neo-pagan organisation Artgemeinschaft Germanische Glaubens-Gemeinschaft in 2003.[1][2][3] A similar anti-Christian symbol is "Odins Raben", which translates to Odins Ravens, the symbol similarly depicts two ravens attacking an Ichthys.[4]

A drawn version of the symbol

While the symbol was created by and is mostly associated with far-right pagan circles, this association is not necessarily the case.[3]

Usage

The design of the symbol can often vary.

A variant of the symbol was used on a hoodie produced by the in far-right circles popular Thor Steinar named "No Inquisition".[5] Some German pagan metal bands such as XIV Dark Centuries[de] have also previously used the symbol.[6]

Assessments

The Evangelical Association of Saxony and the Office for Worldview and Sect Issues of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Saxony recognizes it as clearly anti-Christian symbolism. A clear association to the far-right extremist scene was however not concluded.[3]
