Dmytro Bahaliy

Dmytro Ivanovych Bahaliy (Ukrainian: Дмитро Іванович Багалій, Russian: Дмитрій Ивановичъ Багалѣй) was a Ukrainian historian and public and political figure, one of founding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society since 1923. Dmytro Bahaliy also was a professor and rector of the Kharkiv University (1887, 1906–1910) and mayor of Kharkiv city (1914–1917). He became first who compiled full collection of works of Hryhoriy Skovoroda. During the Imperial Russia period Bahaliy served as an official and achieved title of Active State Councillor. He became an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences and nine universities across the Russian Empire (1906). Until 1917 Bahaliy was a member of Constitutional Democratic Party and State Council. Following the February Revolution he voluntarily handed away his mayoral seat of Kharkiv to Socialist-Revolutionary Vladimir Karelin.
