History and boundaries

The constituency was created in 1921 as a 4-seat constituency, under the Government of Ireland Act 1920, for the 1921 general election to the House of Commons of Southern Ireland, whose members formed the 2nd Dáil. It elected 4 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) to the Dáil in 1921 and 1922. It succeeded the 2-seat United Kingdom Parliament constituency of Cork City.

Under the Electoral Act 1923, it became a 5-seat constituency for the 1923 general election to the 4th Dáil.[26] Its representation fluctuated between 4 and 5 seats until its abolition for the 1969 general election.
